Tonight! James McAvoy wants another of Patrick Stewart's roles, Star Wars movies get moved and some news tidbits from Comicon the home game, all that and more on this sci fi edition of Multiverse Tonight!

Welcome to the Scifi edition of Multiverse Tonight episode 86. Well we’re getting deep into summer now. Too bad, we can’t go to the movies really. If the year ended right now Bad Boys four life would be the number one film of the year.  Kinda sad really. I actually got to go to an actual movie theater and see a movie the other week. My mother in law rented out the local theater here in Kingman to have a mask required screening of Bohemian Rhapsody. Very good movie. Well let’s see what’s in the news today starting with Star Trek news.

Star Trek

James McAvoy wants to take over for Patrick Stewart again, this time not as Professor Xavier, but as Jean-Luc Picard. Talking with Jimmy Fallon on the Tonight Show, The Scottish star  said quote ‘Jimmy, that is the only world that exists, in which I play a young Jean-Luc Picard,’

‘Any other world is just an alternate reality in a bad episode of Star Trek. It’s happening!’ He then added: ‘If they don’t hire me I’m going to make it on my phone! I’m calling that right now.

I’m doing the virtual lockdown equivalent of rubbing my scent all over Patrick’s face and saying, “This territory is mine!”’ James then laughed: ‘All other bald actors can f*** off! It’s me!’ unquote. Well let’s think about that. He was a good professor X, now I don’t know if I could see him as a young Picard on an episode of Picard, but if they do a reboot of Star Trek The Next Generation I suppose he might make a good choice for that.

I’m looking forward to Lower Decks next month on CBS All Access, The official abbreviation has been given, CBS Consumer Products exec John Van Citters announced on Twitter quote Per the combined powers of myself, @MikeMcMahanTM and the glory of Kirk and Spock, it is LDS. unquote  I like it LDS is good, By the way, the official merchandise is now available at shop.startrek.com. They have a logo shirt and mug available. Lower Decks will premiere on CBS All Access on August sixth, it will also be on CTV Sci-Fi Channel and Crave in Canada on August sixth as well. Those of you outside the US and Canada no word yet.

And speaking of Lower Decks, Deadline dot com has learned that commedican Paul Scheer will be on the show as Lt. Commander Andy Billups, the Chief Engineer of the Cerritos, making him the boss of Ensign Rutherford, played by Eugene Cordero.

And this news just breaking today, season three of Star Trek Discovery will start on October fifteenth, which is just one week after the conclusion of Lower Decks first season.

Doctor Who and Star Trek actor Maurice roeves has passed away at the age of 83. The Scottish actor’s agent posted the following statement on Twitter quote “It is with great sadness that we can confirm the passing of our wonderful client Maurice Roeves,"“Maurice had a hugely successful career in both theatre and screen which spanned several decades, starting in his home country of Scotland and moving to London and the United States.“He was loved by his legions of fans for many of his performances, including Vince Diver in Tutti Frutti, Stotz in Doctor Who, a Romulan captain in Star Trek and Colonel Edmund Munro in The Last Of The Mohicans.

“Maurice loved nothing more than being on set with his fellow actors and worked right up until the end, recently being seen in the BBC series The Nest at the start of this year.

“As well as being a truly dedicated and gifted actor, he was also a real gentleman and a delight to have as a client. We will miss him greatly and our thoughts and love go out to Vanessa and his family.” unquote  He also had a role in 1995’s Judge Dredd, Cheers, Baywatch, Days of our Lives and many other shows. We send our condolences to the UK.

Star Wars

Reopening of Disney properties, I’m sure not everyone is clamoring to go and visit Star Wars Galaxies Edge. Well good news, there’s a book for that, Syfy Wire posted an exclusive look at the book Star Wars Galaxies Edge Traveler’s Guide to Batuu. Author Cole Horton told them to quote "We always had in mind that this could be for people who hadn’t yet been to the land and it could also be for people who have been to Galaxy’s Edge,". "I never anticipated writing it in the context of a pandemic and now, something like this could provide people a way of going to this place, even when all of us are staying home for a while. I think now, knowing where we’ve come, I’m even more excited that this is gonna be out there in the world and hopefully, it provides people a way of experiencing Batuu while we’re all sheltering in place." unquote THe book was influenced by the Rick Steves travel guides of the 20th century and is told from the point of view of Eloc Throno and his droid companion, the book is now on Sale. you can look at the preview for it at  Syfy wire, th elink is in the show notes. https://www.syfy.com/syfywire/star-wars-galaxys-edge-travelers-guide-to-batuu

Giancarlo Esposito will be back for season two of the Mandalorian, due out in October. But he says he’s promised that it was going to be great saying  about conversations he’s had with showrunner Jon Favreau quote “I’ve had a chance to have some conversations with him. So, I haven’t seen any of [Season] 2 yet, but it’s gonna be power-packed, and I think in Jon’s mind, he’s probably already writing [Season] 3.”

Disney has announced that the new series of Star Wars films will be delayed a year.

Untitled Star Wars previously dated December 16, 2022 moves to December 22, 2023

Untitled Star Wars previously dated December 20, 2024 moves to December 19, 2025

Untitled Star Wars previously dated December 18, 2026 moves to December 17, 2027

Taika Waititi has confirmed to the BBC that he’s in the process of writing a new film. He couldn’t give any details other than quote “We’re writing” but at least that’s something, so here’s to that.

Geek  News

Well streaming services have been doing well this year with the pandemic and all, no more than Netflix, which in its second quarter investor letter reported that the company netted 10.1 million new subscribers. They also made 6.15 billion in revenue netting a payout of $1.59 a share.  HOwever they think the second half of 2020 won’t be so lucrative saying quote “We expect less growth for the second half of 2020 compared to the prior year,” Netflix's letter continues. “As we navigate these turbulent circumstances, we’re focused on our members by continuing to improve the quality of our service and bringing new films and shows to people’s screens.” unquote By the way, I hold a couple of shares of Netflix stock.

The big budget movie Tenet has been taken completely off the schedule by Warner Bros. It was due in theaters next month after being twice delayed. And now a market Analyst for Cowen, doesn’t think that theater will be open until next year saying quote "We had previously assumed that the spread of COVID-19 would be relatively halted, with social distancing requirements significantly lessened by late 2020," Creutz "We have now extended that timeline out to at least mid-2021; the situation remains very fluid, and we do not rule out the possibility that the impact could last even longer.""We now expect domestic theaters to be largely closed until mid-2021, in part because we don't think studios will be interested in releasing their largest movies into a capacity-constrained footprint." unquote He’s probably right

Idris Elba is on the side of free speech, specifically old shows with outdated depictions of race. He told Radio Times quote “I’m very much a believer in freedom of speech,” the actor said. “But the thing about freedom of speech is that it’s not suitable for everybody.”

Elba continued, “To mock the truth, you have to know the truth. But to censor racist themes within a show, to pull it – wait a second, I think viewers should know that people made shows like this.” “Out of respect for the time and the movement, commissioners and archive-holders pulling things they think are exceptionally tone-deaf at this time – fair enough and good for you. But I think, moving forward, people should know that freedom of speech is accepted, but the audience should know what they’re getting into… I don’t believe in censorship,” he added. “I believe that we should be allowed to say what we want to say. Because, after all, we’re story-makers.” unquote I’m just gonna leave this here without comment.

Bill and Ted Face The Music is coming to theaters and on demand on September first, instead of being pushed back to 2021.

What We Do in the Shadows season three will spend some time exploring Colin Robinson’s origins, during the panel at SDCC Comic Con at home executive producer Paul Sims told fans that "there might be a search that [Colin] goes on" in order to gain a better understanding of himself. He also hinted that Nandor might be searching for love.

The Orville stars Adrianne Palicki and Scott Grimes have filed for divore a second time. They first filed papers in July of last year, but it was withdrawn in November. Now it’s apparently on again. Perhaps having to shelter together didn’t work out? We will never know. But we don’t have to worry about the next season of the show, it was filmed before the pandemic and should debut on Hulu this fall.

Regis Philbin has passed away at the age of 88 from Natural Causes. Regis has had a long long career, holding the Guiness world record for the most hours on US Television. His TV work began in 1962 as the announcer for The Tonight Show. In 1964 he got his own show , which didn't last long. He’s shown up on many shows, sometimes as himself. He’s appeared on Get Smart, rowan and martins laugh in, Chips, Fantasy Island, Kung Fu: the Legend Continues, Seinfeld, The Fresh Prince of bel-air, Spin City, the Simpsons, Hercules, Family Guy But he's most famous for being the host of game shows like Password Plus, the New Hollywood Squares, who wants to be a millionaire and many more. But he’s best known for sitting next to Kathie Lee Gifford or Kelly Ripa or his wife Joy on the Live with...show starting in 1988. He has also co-hosted the Miss America pageant, appeared at Wrestlemania VII and so much more. He is survived by his wife and kids.

We also mourn Mythbusters star and White Rabbit Project host Grant Imahara. Who passed away suddenly of a brain aneurysm at the age of 49. Grant was a brilliant electrical engineer and roboticist by training when he joined MythBusters in the third season and was with the show until 2014 when he, Kari Byron and Tori Belleci left. They would reunite for Netflix’s short lived White Rabbit Project.  He was born in LA on October 23rd of 1970 and studied electrical engineering at the University of Southern California. After graduation he got a job at Lucasfilm;s THX labs. During his time there he became chief model maker  specializing in animatronics working on the Star Wars Prequels, The Matrix Sequels, Galaxy Quest, The Lost World Jurassic Park and other films. In 2000, he competed on Battlebots and was the first season Middleweight runner up.  He then joined Mythbusters, A fan of Star Trek, he got to play Hikaru Sulu in the fanmade web series Star Trek Continues. Grant is survived by his family, as he was engaged once, but never married. He will be missed.
