Tonight Superman Legacy hires actors, ms Marvel gets her TV debut Emmy nominations and we remember Jimmy Walden. All that and more on this episode of Multiverse tonight. Comic books, sci-fi, fantasy and more. If you're looking for a roundup of geeky news, you're in the right place. This is Multiverse tonight. Music, and here's our host, thomas Townley. Hello everyone and welcome to episode 193 Multiverse tonight. And well, it's News is kind of here and there right now. Of course, as you well know by now, the screen actors Guild has gone on strike, so strike two. So they've joined the writers on strike. So entertainment productions kind of ground to a complete halt because you don't have writers, you don't have actors, you don't really have much. So anyway, but there is box office to talk about. So let's go over the box office news At starting at number 10, as usual, and number 10 is the Little Mermaid, which fell from number 9 to number 10, it's brought in 293.9 million . Joyride fell from number 6 to number 9. No hard feelings went from number 7 to number 8. Transformers, rise of the Beast went from 8, went up a place from 8 to 7. It's total growth so far is 152.7 million dollars. Recently it's made about 421 million worldwide. Spireman Across the Spiderverse fell one spot from number 5 to number 6. Elemental has gone from 4 to 5. Indiana Jones and Dial of Destiny dropped two spots from number 2 to number 4. That's sitting at 145.3 domestic worldwide, about 302.3 million dollars. The box office is really soft this year. Insidious, the Red Door, fell from 1 to 3. Sound of Freedom went from 3 to 2. And starting and premiering, I should say, number 1 is Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1, which brought in 80 million dollars this past weekend. And, according to the Hollywood Reporter, mission Impossible Dead Reckoning Part 1, tops the weekend box office chart with a 5 day debut of 80 million in North America, including 56.2 million for the weekend proper. The Paramount Skydance Pick is the latest summer tent pole to come in behind expectations. Getting into the weekend, the movie starring Tom Cruise has been tracking to open to 90 million or more domestically for those 5 days. Dead Reckoning boasts the second best domestic opening of the franchise behind Mission Impossible 2, which posted a 5 day debut of 78.5 million, not just for inflation. Now the new Mission Impossible opened Wednesday in order to give the film more lead time. Before Barbie, the twin pictures of Barbie and Oppenheimer, which opened July 21st in just a few days and we'll see how it does. I had to put together a Barbie feature in the store recently and let's say that was hard work. It's big. Have you ever seen those big, huge theater displays? Anyway, let's go on to the DC Comics News and we begin DC Comics News with Superman Legacy. That who has that? Has added three new actors, according to Vandy Fair and other sources. Isabella Merced will play hot girl. Edie Gaffagee will be playing Mr Terrific Edie Edie Gaffagee, I guess the name is and Nathan Fillian, who will be trying a green lantern, although not necessarily the green lantern now. It's supposed to start shooting January 2024 and it will set the course for the new DCU that the Guardians of the Galaxy filmmaker is building in collaboration with fellow chair and CEO of DC of DC Studios, pierce Saffron. Now joining them will be Anthony Kerrigan, fresh off his Emmy nomination for a standout work in HBO's Barry, who has been cast as classic DC character, minimal foe, aka archaeologist turned hero Rex Mason. Now James Gunn has clarified what is and what isn't canon in the DC universe. This past January, studio chairman, dc studio co-chairman and CEO's, gun and pierce Saffron announced that DCU chapter one, gods and Monsters is slayed for five films and five TV series that are connected and designed to minimize audience confusion with the extended DC universe, the DC extend universe. Now guns, superman legacy, Batman, brad, the brave and the bold and the authority are included in the movie lineup and max original series, creature commander, suicide squad, spin-off, waller and lanterns are three of your TVs. So gun has described his Superman reboot as the true foundation of for the creative, his creative version for the DC universe. But the man of steel won't be the first superhero of the new DCU. Now the filmmaker and sous chief confirmed that's Zolo man. Madrina, who makes his debut as Jamie Reese in blue beetle will continue on in the DCU alongside a handful of other characters from the soon to be discontinued DC EU canon. Now this will include, of course, amanda Waller and the peacemaker who will be returning in waller. The anime my adventures with Superman has gotten off to a good start and appears that has been giving a season two order, according to series creator Jake white, who respond to a fan query that a second season has been ordered. So that's good news. Now here's some interesting news. Former smallville actress Allison Mack has been released from prison. Cnn is reporting that the actress is out in the world. According to the federal bureau of prisons now, mac was a high-ranking member of the sex called Nvixm, a group that manipulated women is becoming slaves to leader Keith rennery. Now details about the case shocked a lot of observers. Nexium was basically sex trafficking women and got brought down after a long investigation back in 2020. Rennery was sentenced to 120 years in prison, but before that trial even began, mac pleaded guilty to rectoring and conspiracy charges in 2019 and, uh, so she got a little leniency for that. Let's go on to the marvel news, and marvel news begins with polygon pictures, which has announced its involvement in marvel sues upcoming and made series spiderman freshman year. Animation for spiderman freshman year will be produced by japanese digital animation studio polygon pictures. Spiderman freshman year allows peer par follows pier parker on his way to becoming spiderman in the mcu with a journey unlike we've ever seen before, with a style that celebrates the character's early comic book roots. On the series is confirmed to see charlie cox reprises role as matt murdoch, slash daredevil, and paul f tompkins as bentley wittman, slash wizard. Our characters that are confirmed to appear in freshman year but have not been publicly cast include omday's show here osborne, norman osborne and speed demon, rhino, auto octavius, steven strange and the cast of other characters, and you can see that list in our show notes. The spiderman freshman year is scheduled to debut on disney plus sometime in 2024 . iman velani, the actor the actor who plays kamala in the marvel cinematic universe, starting in last year's miz marvel series on disney plus and continuing on the big screen with the marvel's letter this year, will be co-writing a new comic alongside miz marvel tv writer sabir pirazada, carl's carlos gilmez and adam gawram who will handle the art, and sarah pichelli who will provide the main covers. Montel air paint, tamer weekly quote. This was way scarier than joining the mcu. For me, those projects feel like they live in their own dimension. So I guess I can separate myself easily. But you can hold a comic book. I've never written anything before in my entire life but I have read many comics so I just wrote what I want, would want to read. I was given a very professional tool to write was essentially my own fan fiction, unquote. Now, and not to that big revelation from the miz marvel series finale, the new comic will be titled miz marvel, the new mutant. Like ron screen counterpart. The comic version of kamala is officially a mutant now. That's also the explanation for why why she's coming back so soon because modern marvel readers know that the x-men have mastered the art of bringing mutants back to life now. When kamala was created a decade ago by writer g willow wilson either santa amna and steven wacker, an artist, adrian alfana and jmean mckelvey she was an inhuman who gained her powers from the release of terjen miss. Her newfound mutant stash doesn't replace her in human history. Instead, it gives marvel's first mutant, first major muslim superhero, a whole new identity to reckon with. Given the historical animosity between mutants and humans, it'll probably be a struggle. Now, speaking of miz marvel, the entire disney plus series will be broadcast on regular over the air TV. As the news comes from ABC, as they say that the Disney plus series will air in its entirety, starting August 5th with the first three episodes and then the final three episodes will get eight. We'll get the 8 pm to 11 pm slot on August 12th. Now this is not the first time that Disney Plus exclusive has aired on broadcast TV. The Mandalorian got the ABC treatment back in February. In fact, these Star Wars TV show also got play on free form and FX in the same time slot, so there's an obvious incentive to fill some time during these two strikes. Marvel has announced a new Thunderbolt series that will introduce a new Thunderbolts team to the Marvel Universe. Colin Kelly and Jackson Lansing, aka the Hive Mind, who recently concluded the run on Captain America's Sandelf Liberty and continue the right on Guardians of the Galaxy, are rying the new Thunderbolt series with artwork by Giroldo Borges. Bucky Barnes, in his new role as the Revolution, puts together a team to help him act on a century's worth of secrets left behind by the fall of the outer circle that only he has knowledge of, and bring down some of the Marvel Universe's biggest threats and worst actors. Among Bucky's chosen teammates are Black Widow Sharon Carter, aka Destroyer, white Widow, red Guardian, us Agent, and Shang-Chi. Bucky will have some help leading the unorthodox crew from none other than Contessa Valentina, allegra the Fontaine and, as they set their sights on the likes of Red Skull, kingpin and Dr Doom. You can see the team assembled on the Thunderbolts no 1 variant cover by Mammoud Asrere in comic book stores. Here's the official synopsis for the series Bucky Barnes. The Revolution just inherited the mountain of Cove or Intel, and he has one objective justice. Like lightning. He's going after the establishment, the people no one is willing to or able to take down and will do whatever it takes to win Team. With the mysterious Contessa Valentina Allegra, the Fontaine Bucky assembled a team of Black Ops heavy hitters to pursue heavy profile targets like the Red Skull Kingpin and even Dr Doom himself. No one is safe from the Thunderbolts. Jennifer Garner is picking up Electra's Psy once again. After a nearly 20 year hiatus, the actress is returning to the role of Marvel Comics assassin Anto Heroin for Deadpool 3,. According to multiple sources to the Hollywood Reporter, the Marvel Studios production is currently shooting with Ryan Reynolds reprising his fan favorite part of the fourth wall breaking merc with a mouth. Hugh Jackman has come out of Marvel Retirement to play Wolverine once again, and this time Wolverine will be wearing the comic book Yellow and Black costume. Now Garner first played the Marvel Assassin in 20th Century Fox's Daredevil in 2003, that co-starred with Ben Affleck. While the film was now hit, it did spawn a spin-off with Garner topping Solo as Electra to use later. That too, not a box office success. It was noteworthy that Garner was one of the few women to lead a studio comic book movie at the time. Her involvement in Deadpool 3 hints at some sort of a multiverse angle to the film. That has long been rumored, and it's possible that other characters from Marvel's films could pop up in the feature. But, this being Deadpool, one can't rule out some meta self-awareness either. Now let's go on to the Star Trek news. A new Star Trek role-playing game is coming. Later this year, modiphius Entertainment announced Captain's Log's Solo role-playing game, a new solo tabletop role-playing game that will be released in August 2023. The game uses a streamlined version of Star Trek's Adventures rules, with players writing their own Captain's Logs as they explore the galaxy in a year creator or randomly generated adventures. Now, notably Captain's Log's solo role-playing game, will let players play in any era of Star Trek, ranging from the 21st to the 32nd century. The game allows for a cooperative play with friends serving as senior staff or with a game master facilitating the answers. Star Trek Adventures game masters can also use the random story tables in Captain's Log when planning Star Trek Adventures campaigns. Idw Publishing has announced Star Trek Hollow Wien, a 4-issue mini-series from writer Chris Segwera and artist Joe Isma that combines the classic Star Trek connection in the region of holed up episodes with a spooky season spirit. Francesco Francavilla provides cover A for Hollow Wien, number one, and Isma provides cover B. Star Trek Hollow Wien's plot sees Captain Jean LeCouche Picard and the rest of the USS Enterprise crew attempting to unwind after a difficult mission by celebrating the Earth of Hallow Day of Halloween. While the Enterprise crew aims for the celebration to be a treat, things quickly go wrong. Here's the synopsis After enduring an anxiety-ridden passage through a solar storm, captain Picard and the crew of the USS Enterprise take the celebration to celebrate Halloween to reset the mood. But while the Earth Hallow Day involves sweet treats and other festivities, they soon learn that fears and season when crew members begin to go missing one by one. Now Star Trek Hollow Wien is one of several Star Trek comics coming from IDW Publishing in October, as the publisher has been expanding its line of Star Trek universe comic books. Star Trek Picard's Academy is a new series following Jean-Luc Picard in his Academy Days, which will launch in October and the first comic book crossover event, dave Blood, will conclude in Star Trek Number 12. And fans can relive the events through the eyes of Shaxx from Lord Dex in Star Trek Dave Blood, shaxx Best Day, the One Shot. The Star Trek motion picture mini-series echoes also concludes in October. While Star Trek Defiant embarks on a new story arc, a Piece of the Action and Strange New World will continue its second comic book mini -series, the Scorpius Run. So look for those on comic book store shelves or wherever you buy comic books. And it's not like you got a lot of TV to watch. Anyway, let's go on to the Star Wars news. The Mandalorian director and producer, Rick Thamiyawa, has settled who the title of the series is referring to. Turns out it's whatever armored person is on the screen. Quote Bo in many respects this season is also the Mandalorian because it's so much about her story and her journey and her sort of initial ideas of going back and bringing her people back together that got derailed after she lost the Dark Saber, unquote. So there you go, folks. The Mandalorian is just whatever Mandalorian happens to be on screen at the moment. It's not referring to a specific Mandalorian character. So whether it's Boba Fett or it's Dindijarren or it's Bo Katana, any Mandalorian is your Mandalorian. And that's it for the Star Wars news. Yeah, you know, when there's not, you know, any production going on, there's not a lot of news sometimes. Let's go on and finish this out with some good old geek news. And the geek news begins with Fox's animation domination, which will return on Sunday, october 1st. Joining the Simpsons, bob Burgers and Family Guy will be Dan Harmon's new show Crapopolis. Set in the mythical ancient Greece, crapopolis tells the story of a dysfunctional family of humans, gods and monsters trying to run one of the world's first cities, while also trying their best not to kill each other in the process. The series will make its series debut on Fox with a special two episode preview event on Sunday, september 24th, immediately following the Fox NFL doubleheader. So watch your listings as it's probably going to go long. Actors on strike Performers Union SAG After has released strike rules governing work its members can and cannot perform amid the work stoppage. Now actors took to the picket line starting this past Friday morning and shoots of major films pretty much shut down immediately. Now the guidelines released on Thursday state that the union's 160,000 affected members would be prohibited from all principle on camera work, including acting, singing, dancing and stunts on top of off-camera work such as voice acting and narration. So no video games folks. Also, bard is its actors from doing background and stand-in work, negotiations for future services and any ancillary work for a struck production, among other things. So in other words, nada, nothing. They can't do anything, and that includes promotional activity like interviews, award shows and podcasts. Yes, even podcasts aren't allowed by union members. Now, top talent can't walk the that can't walk the Venice and Toronto red carpets or take part in an ME for your consideration campaign. Now Universal moved up the red carpet for the London premiere of Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer by an hour on Thursday evening, a local time, in a bid to allow the star-studded cast to get their, you know, photo called or spot interviews ahead of the walkout announcement. And Emily Blunt and Kylian Murphy exited the premiere after the strike was called. Now also on the table the already underway Galway Film Festival in Ireland, the Op-Hard Red Carpet Newark event on January 17th and fan events at Comic-Con, which starts next week. So pretty much you know you won't see your actors anywhere but a picket line. So news from from San Diego Comic-Con will be very stunted this year. So perhaps this is the year to skip folks, you know, save that money, but that might be the bare use. Yeah, it's going to Comic-Con and standing on the line for a panel of Hall H when there's not going to be a panel for whatever show you're looking for just saying. However, barring that Emmy nominations are out. The television Academy today released. The television Academy released nominations for the 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards. A committee star, yvette Nicole Brown, and television Academy chairman Frank Sherma began writing the nominees for major categories for the award show to be held on September 18th. This will be interesting. The ceremony will air on Fox on September 18th. While it goes well, but with that strike by the Writers Guild and the Screen Actors Guild, coupled with no comments that studio management has intention of engaging your faith with writers or actors, it seems that the ceremony might be scaled down or perhaps even canceled. Now genre nominees include Pedro Pascal for the Last of Us, jenna Ortega for Wednesday and House of the Dragon, and Succession in major categories. No, succession in particular is noble because Brian Cox, jeremy Strong and Karen Culkin are nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in the Drama Series. That's the first time the Lead Actor category has seen three actors from the same series receive a nomination in the same year. Now, where that will submit one of them as the winner or dilute the voting power of Succession fans and hand the award to another show is well anyone's guess. Now, while the Star Wars and Game of Thrones world's got noble traction this year. It was kind of a down year for Star Trek and Marvel, whose nominations were limited to mostly the technical awards, like editing for Ms Marvel and makeup for Picard. That may be a reflection on the critical appraisal of those shows or just that the hugely successful series took all the air out of the room for other shows, because Succession, barry and Bar-Caul all ended during awards cycles and you know those shows tend to, you know, get one last grasp at the big prize on their way out. Anyway, you can take a look at all the award nominations. We'll have a link to that in the show notes. But I do wanna note the outstanding animated program nominations Bob's Burgers received in the nomination for the Plight Before Christmas. Enter Galactic from Netflix received nomination Again. The Harte-Koskis Primal received nomination for Shadow of Fate, rick and Morty received one for the Knight Family. It's a very good episode. So yeah, here's hoping for that. And the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror 33 also received nomination. Onto Business News. Bob Iger's second tenure at Disney is far from over. This past Wednesday the Walt Disney Company board announced that it agreed to extend Iger's contract for an additional two years, instead of Iger departing the company at the end of 2024, the executive's contract now runs through the end of 2026. John Ridley is putting his own spin on the alien invasion genre with mystery of compliance and upcoming sci-fi thriller for comic book publisher IDW Ridley, an Oscar nominee for the other history of the DC Universe and then Oscar nominee for pinning 12 Years of Slave, will team with artist Stefano Rafale on the book. The duo are also behind DC's GCPD, the Blue Wall, and the Hollywood Reporter has a first look at the series. The mystery of compliance takes place 37 years after Earth was secretly invited by an alien force called the Devolution, which has been shaping humanity in preparation for our assimilation into its empire. The 13 mysteries of the Devolution are responsible for napalding different aspects of human life, with the mystery of compliance being the most feared. Led by Afigal Sina, the mystery of compliance ensures all ministries stay in line and focus on the larger mission. As Earth stands on the verge of assimilation, things start to go wrong and Abigail must deal with a conspiracy head on. And that sounds like a very interesting story. And again we have time. Let's go read comics. Robert Kirkman's imprint has nabbed in their major license. This time the Universal Monsters. Skybound Entertainment has partnered with Universal Products and Experiences for multiple limited series comics based on the stable of classic Universal Monsters characters. The first series will be published on October 25th with Universal Monsters Dracula. Now Eisner Award winner James Tinian IV will append the series with his Department of Truth caliber Martin Simmons, providing true profiting art. After this four-issue series wraps up, even more comics based on the fanfare of horror characters will follow. Now, according to press releases, universal Monsters Dracula will unfold over four substantial issues, with the first installment plunging readers into the eerie world of Dr John Seward. After he admits a seemingly delusional new patient to his asylum, recounting chilling tales of a demonic entity residing next door, the skeptical doctor attempts to rationalize the unexplainable by his adopted dire lucy, mysteriously succumbed to the malevolent influence of the enigmatic Count Dracula. Other characters from the original film and book will be featured as well. Rm Renfield means Seward, dr John Seward, ben Helsing and more. And finally, tonight remember someone who has had a big bucket of wind and had a big life. Jimmy Weldon, the cheerioventralchist kid's TV host and actor who provided the voice for the endangered duck yacky doodle on Hannah Barbera contunes starring in the early 1960s, has passed away. Weldon's death on Thursday in Paso Robles, california, was reported by American Legion Post 43 in Hollywood, where he was chaplain emeritus With the puppet Webster Webfoot, a ducky-cred 1940s Weldon hosted TV shows for youngsters in New York, los Angeles and cities in the San Joaquin Valley. The Texan also appeared on episodes of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, dragnet, the Waltons, swat, bj and the Bear Dallas, the Rockford Files, different Strokes and it's Living. Weldon voiced yacky doodle, a yellow duckling with green wings who is constantly being bailed out of trouble by his best friend, a protective bulldog named Chopper, on recurring segments of the Yogi Bear Show from 1961 to 1962. Weldon also served under General George Patton and helped liberate Buchenwald concentration camp in World War II. Jimmy Weldon was 99 years old. That's a good long life.
