Tonight, DC's Joker has Oscars in its eyes, Iron Man becomes an Italian work of art, and finally my last my last interview, or is it, from SmallvilleCon with Rick Stacy. All that more on this edition of Multiverse Tonight, comic books, sci-fi, fantasy, and more. If you're looking for a roundup of geeky news, you're in the right place. This is Multiverse Tonight. And here's our host. Town Lake. Yeah. I cut it off before I finished my own name. Welcome to the comics edition of Multiverse Tonight. Um how was your summer? You know? Or if you're below the equator winter. Uh guess uh it'll be time to sit down and watch some TV, read a comic book or two. You know? Consider life, the universe and everything. You know. In the northern hemisphere, he'll be uh the days will be getting shorter. You know, normal stuff. Uh I myself need to sit down. I have I have a comic I need to review, I have shows I need to watch, and not a lot of time to do them. So you know why why am I sitting here, you know, talking when there's things to be done? So let's get on with the show. With some marvel with some DC news. You know, we uh have some info still trickling in from San Diego Comic-Con. Yeah, I know, it just slowly trickles. See, the the show's too big. If it takes this long for stuff to trickle in, it it's just too big, too long. Cut it. Cut it down now. Anyway, the Flash uh the Flash is Grant Gustin has revealed a little about how the crisis gets started over on The Flash. Talking with comicbook.com, he said, quote, I can't spoil too too much because I haven't read it yet. I've been teased a lot from our guys uh what it's going to be. The modder shows up at the end of of the uh first four episodes. Uh the first episode and says the universe is in jeopardy, and in order to save the universe, Barry Allen has to die. And Barry Allen doesn't know about this deal. Oliver made with the moder either, so someone's going to die. Will Barry die like he did in the Crisis in in the comic book version of the crisis? Guess we'll have to wait and see. The Flash's sixth season starts in one month on October the 8th. Lucifer's fifth and final seasons premiere episode has a title. The Lucifer Writers Room Twitter account shared an image of the season 5 premiere script, which is written by Justin Ning and directed by Eagle Ego Eagleson. The title Really Sad Devil Guy. It seems things are going well for the neglectful ruler of hell. I really need to get myself caught up on this show. Now, we have some guest star news for episode 5 of DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Jessica Jones' alum, Terry Chen, will be playing the legendary conqueror, Genghis Khan. The episode titled Mortal Khan Cat has the ruler of Mongolia finding himself in 1990s era Hong Kong. Being a quick learner, he starts to use his strategic mind to conquer the planet. The episode will also mark the directing debut of series regular Katie Lott. Well, if some are interested in seeing Joker, personally, not me. It's just not my kind of comic book movie. However, it is getting a lot of possible Oscar buzz, and at the screening of the movie at the Venice Film Festival, the movie received an eight-minute standing ovation from the audience. The movie, which is not connected to the DC EU or Batman at all, could be the catalyst for Warner Media and DC to take creative and independent chances with their characters in the future. Yeah. Now, uh, if this does if this causes a change to comic book movies or not, the producer Emma Tingler Koskoff is not a fan of the genre. Speaking with AP News, she said, quote, It's not my preferred genre, the comic book genre, Koskoff told told them. I literally can't watch these movies those movies. I try, but I can't. I should, but I can't. But I love this movie. Even if I didn't work on this movie, I would love this movie, unquote. In fact, the origin of the Joker isn't even related to the comic book version. Writer and director Todd Phillips was quoted as saying that the Joker doesn't fall into a vav acid, saying, quote, that's a comic book thing, unquote. You know. I hate to say it, but does doesn't this not make it a comic book movie tangentially? I mean, if if it's not actually based on the material, except for a few loose strands, is it a comic book movie? I have to say no. I a a comic book movie has to be based on a comic book, and more than just name or loosely based character. It would be like ha like making a Star Wars movie, except no Stormtroopers, no Galactic Empire, there is a character named Luke Skywalker, but he bears no resemblance to the character we know and doesn't have the same motivation motivations. Now, would that be a Star Wars movie? Would it? Anyway. James Gunn did a Q ⁇ A on Twitter, and he revealed his musical plans for the Suicide Squad, saying, quote, music is an incredibly important part of all my films, both soundtrack and score. So yeah. But I it will be a lot different than Guardians musically, and in so many other ways. Unquote. I'll be interested it'll be interesting to see what uh James Gunn puts together for the soundtrack. Unlike the Guardians movie, he won't be limited to a certain period of time. So the uh music should span you know generations. And speaking of the Suicide Squad movie, actor-director Tika Watiti is apparently in talks for a role in that movie. Deadline reports that there will be a table reading of the script on September 11th, with the production starting on September 23rd. He would be joining Margot Robbie, Kyle Davis, Joel Kinneman, and Jai Courtney, who are all reprising the roles from the first Suicide Squad. Excuse me. Andre Zelba is laying the newcomers, including David Dashmalian as Polkadot Man, Daniela Melchior as Rat Ratcatcher, Lula Borg, Nathan Fillian, and Steve Ajee as King Shark. Deadline is also reporting that former Doctor Who star Peter Capaldi has joined the cast. Deadline reports that uh also reports that SNL's Pete Davidson is in talks for a small cameo as well. The movie is due out in twelve in 11 months from now, on August 6th, 2021. Well, okay, not 11 months from now. About 22 months from now. Yeah, time's not my thing, folks. I live I live in a world of darkness. Anyway, let's go on with some Marvel news. One of the biggest shockers from the D23Con was the revelation that Moon Knights will be coming to Disney Plus as a series. Moon Knight Bill Senkowitz. Once in, Bill took to Twitter to let Disney know that he's available to help by tweeting back at New Legend, quote, yes, I'd absolutely love that. At Disney Plus, you have my contact in contact info. But just in case, here it is again. Senkiewicz already has someone in mind to play Mark Moon Knight Spectre. Although it might be a stretch, Keanu reads. Having personally written, quote, Keanu would nail every one of MK's alternate personalities. Chill enough to be Lockley the Cabbie, or Lyft Driver, because of Uber, suave enough to pull billionaire Grant, cold and cruel enough to nail the Merc Spectre, inscrutably badass enough to bring Moon Knight home. So, do you have any suggestions for the role? Or should we all just uh tweet at Keanu to ta to you know ask for the role himself? Let me know. We talked about James Gunn's Suicide Squad. Well, Mr. Gunn has been answering questions about the choices of the songs he used in Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1. In response to a question about what song he was unable to use, he responded, quote, I've licensed every song I've sought I although on the first film, I inquired about Never Ben to Spain, and its price tag scared me off from even considering it. And notoriously, both Pilot's Magic and ELO's Livin' Thing sequences were both cut from the film. I r regret cutting the Living Thing montage, actually, unquote. In response to a question if we would ever see that montage, he responded, quote, It's a dream of mine to do a re-release of GOTG Volume 1 with Livin' Thing and a couple of other small editions. You know, dare to dream, folks. Dare to dream. Iron Man might have made the ultimate sacrifice in Avengers Endgame, and yes, we know it's a fictional earth, but that doesn't stop people on Earth from on this earth from commemorating him. Daniel Beso in Italy has created a sculpture of Iron Man that sits on a slab of marble in the seaside town of Forte de Marmay, which is located in the province of Lucca in northern Tuscany. The sculpture dubbed Man of Steel captures the hero making the superhero landing that has become the prerequisite of superheroes coming down to Earth. The inscription reads, quote, the first monument dedicated to Iron Man in the year of his cin cinematographic death celebrates Tony Stark, the man who used his great wealth to fight for the ideals in which he believed, unquote. Reminding us that we are and it goes on to quote, reminding us that we are the protagonists of our era, that the future of humanity depends upon our decisions, that all of us must be heroes, unquote. Uh you should go uh look for it online. Uh Baso went and spoke with SciFi Wire about the sculpture, saying, quote, art for me is an opportunity to communicate important messages through beauty, the opportunity to remind us of our individual and collective identity, to stimulate consciousness. Superheroes talk talks to the child we have always we always have in our souls, but they remember us the sense and the meaning to do the right thing. I like the Tony Starr character, who is not always right. He's a man with his imperfections, but uses all his influence and power to help others. So I want to remember this, which is my vision. The reason I chose Iron Man to send this message to the community. I want to remember, even in the wonderful and luxury luxury of Forte de Larmi, and in the crazy and funny Italian summer, the importance of our choices and behavior in everyday life. Very well said. Now, let's go to some geek news. Netflix's The Toys That Made Us is coming back for season three. The documentary series about the history of some of our favorite toy lines will be back on November 15th. No word on what season three will cover. Speaking of uh show premieres, Watchmen will debut on HBO on October 20th. The series is about, quote, set in an alternate history where superheroes are tr treated as outlaws. The drama series Watchmen, debuting this fall from executive producer Damon Lindelhoff, embraces the nostalgia of the original groundbreaking groundbreaking graphic novel of the same name while attempting to break new ground on its own. Unquote. You know the trailer that I've seen looks r looks really good, looks imaginative. I kinda wanna see where they go with this. The summer box office season is over, and there's good news and bad news. The good news, Disney ran away with the summer, with three big movies, The Lion King, Aladdin, and Toy Story 4 grossing more than $1 billion worldwide. The Lion King was the top grosser with $523.5 million in the US. Disney would have done better if it weren't for its merger with Fox. Fox had many duds this summer, including X-Men, Dark Phoenix, Stuber, and The Art of Racing in the Rain. Hollywood walked away with the second spot thanks to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Spider-Man Far From Home. It raked in 700 million, Sony's best, since 2006. However, the box off overall, the box office in North America was down from 2018, down 2% according to Cinema Score. The Hollywood Reporter reports that Gordon Brizick, the Emmy Award writer winning writer of such animated hits as Pinky and the Brain and Animaniacs, has passed away. Brezek's son broke the news that he had died after a long health battle. Gordon was nominated for five daytime Emmys, winning three with his fellow writers for work on Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain, and Pinky Elmira and the Brain. In 1998, he became the first recipient of the Writers Guild of America Animation Writers Caucus Animation Award. His credits also include Captain Simeon and the Space Monkeys, Mighty Max, Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Darkling Duck, Tiny Tune Adventures, Smurfs, Bionic 6, Snort, and many, many more. He is survived by his son, James Colin Brezick, his daughters Jackie and Samantha, his grandchild Logan, and three siblings. He was 68 years old. And now for my interview with Rick Rick Stacy. Hi, good to see you again. Good to see you too. So, uh, what do you have for us today? Uh I have two cells on ROM. No, no, no, no. Uh today I have a a plethora of comic book creative things with me. I have some other creative endeavors I'm involved into with my book and my CDs that I've recorded, uh poker work, poetry, original music, the whole gamut of all that kind of stuff. This is a big comic show, but it's also a big pop culture show. And I want to be the pop of pop culture, so okay, here we go.

Uh and uh you have you uh told us earlier about some Doom Patrol!

Yes. Doom Patrol is very popular right now, it is streaming on DC, and it's gonna be released, I believe, uh in Blu-ray. So Blu-ray and DVD. But Doom Patrol goes back to the quintessential days of the Silver Age in the 60s, and DC had a list, or rather, a gathering, of misfit superheroes that just did not integrate well with people, led by a uh a wonderful wise and older man in a wheelchair. And after the earthquake, we're all better now. Um and it sounds like a precursor to X-Men, but before X-Men, it was the Duke Patrol, and they succeeded for many years telling great stories of adventure, science fiction, and what have you, as they did in the 60s. It rebooted in the 80s under Mike Gold as editor, Paul Kepperberg as the writer, and I was in the discussion stages during those conversations, and I said, put the Duke Patrol in Kansas City. And Mike Gold loved Kansas City, as did Paul Kepperburg, and they said, Where? I still in a real place. I looked up the window of my office, so it's Union Station, which is crumbling and decrepit in this heavy snowstorm. You can look at this Union Station and see plumps of snow moving around on the rooftop because it was an infestation of rats. This is long before Union Station became Science City and what have you. But in the conversations they said, okay, we'll do that, we'll bring them to a new headquarters, K C at Union Station. They can go to Worlds Games, they can go to Westport in Kansas City, to the bars, the Vietnam Memorial, and I said, along those lines, Byrne has just rebooted Superman, and Smallville is now in Kansas. One of the reasons that we're here now, too. So why don't you have Car Kent and Monopa Kent in the plaza in Kansas City, walking distance to Union Station, then bring in a excuse me, a big battle royal. Superman in KC with the Doom Patrol against some bad guys. They did just that. Well the book was you know moving along okay, and then they asked me to do an issue with Paul Cup, focusing on negative one. Her Russian roots in the background. And we did it, and uh took it to them, and they paid me and paid Paul, and then they let us know a couple months later the book had been cancelled for whatever unfortunate reason. Flash forward about three or four months ago, and DC is doing an omnibus collection of book patrol over September. It's about for your viewers at home, this big. Okay. Big coffee table book if you have a big coffee table. And they asked Paul and I to resubmit that story once they found out it was lost in time. Well, I mean I got a handful of moldy pages packed away. I didn't even know I had. Handful thing, like 15. Paul had some of the Xeroxes. We were missing some pages, but we put together enough to get this book to them, minus the three pages. Well, let's go ahead and here. I redid those three pages for them, sent them to D City, they they reached the list of the book, they included this, and they up the retail, which I was very flattered at, and uh um the book which will be out in September. Now we'll have my story as is. They're gonna have MQ Rich people ink it and colour it and what have you. They decided not to do that. They're gonna have the story as is to preserve the flavor of the 80s. And Paul's script. And Paul's script is done with a lot of personal notes to me of it. I'm a word process. Because there's no PC back then, there's no Mac back then. And Paul, who sounds a lot like Jerry Lewis, we talked in the script, it's like, hey Ricky baby, go to the library, get the military Time magazine, you can find a reference for this, is that how you did that? Yeah, there's no internet to look for. So uh it's a labor of love, it's lost to history coming back up, and you'll see it in September, and it's still big yet, we get a hernia from carrying it around.

Oh, excellent. Now, as an as an artist, I gotta ask one thing. What is the hardest thing to draw?

Accurate, intricate battle armor, a mechanic like the intricacies of a car. That's why if you really have to render super super accurate, it's uh arduous of best. If you are drawing and you leave something in the imagination, close count. Okay? And if you're cartooning, like the great cartoonist, including Steve Canyon, or uh not Steve Canyon, Milton Cadet, or did Steve Canyon, or any of the other illustrators of that period, it's it's a cartoon style, so not every small widget and screw and nut has to be there.

Don't know. I They're all challenging one way or the other, but there's not one that I've ever had to do that was so reference intense. Unless this this is the surprise job. Unless it was the Disney stuff, because it all had to be on model. They send you all the model sheets for Dark Wayne Doc. Use the model sheets for a reason. Let me 10 pages back to you and say, unfollow the model sheets. You say this is hard, as opposed to doing uh an undersea armor property. Okay. This is hard because of their interpretation. I'm using the model sheets I'm tracing them. So, well it doesn't look like okay. What job will you do? So those have been the hardest things, those are very simple things.
