Speaker 1:

Tonight. Superman loses the legacy, apocalypse looks for an heir, patrick Stewart gets honored and the naked gun reboots. Plus, we remember Star Trek actor Kenneth Mitchell. All that more in this edition of Multiverse tonight. The book's sci-fi fantasy and more. If you're looking for a roundup of geeky news, you're in the right place. This is Multiverse Tonight, and here's our host, thomas Townley. Well, hello everyone, and welcome to episode 210 of Multiverse Tonight, recorded on March 11th 2024. I'm, of course, your host, thomas Townley, and well, not really much to report right now. Spring is springing upon us. We got through daylight savings time which, by the way, let's all beat down on our members of Congress to finally get rid of this annual pain in the butt. So please do that if you would, but I will. Since this just happened last night, let's cover the Oscars briefly Now. Oppenheimer was the big winner last night, winning Best Picture, director and five other awards for seven total, I mean and broke a 20-year streak of a blockbuster not winning and not winning the top prize. Also, emma Stone and Silly Murphy took home the lead acting prizes. Christopher Nolan took away Best Director. Robert Downley Jr finally won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. Now, oppenheimer isn't science fiction, of course, but again didn't mention Emma Stone winning Best Actress for Poor Things. It's kind of in the genre realm. The big loser, of course, is Barbie, which apparently was shut out. Now let me get that little list of awards here. Barbie won Best Original Song for what Was I Made For from Billie Eilish. Billie Eilish and Fania Sokanol Oppenheimer won Best Music. The Zone of Interest won for Best Sound. Godzilla minus one did win for visual effects, so it's a win for the genre film, and Poor Things won Costume Design and Production Design. Now, my thing about the Oscars is there really should be a Best Drama and Best Comedy award, not just Best Picture. Best Picture is always going to be a drama, you know. Unless it's a movie that causes people to die laughing, it's always going to be a drama. So why not have an award for Best Comedy? You know, it just seems to make more sense to me. But what can we do about it? Caller Congressman? The bath, I guess. Anyway, let's go on with the DC Comics News and DC Comics News and that's an adequate, you know, a right musical piece that starts this with, because we will be talking about Superman. James Gunn revealed that his new Superman movie will simply be called Superman. Well, you know it'll be. It'll be, you know, superman 2025. It'll be how it's going to be talked about, because we already have Superman, even though it's called Superman the movie. But I digress. Anyway, mr Gunn wrote in a post celebrating the first day of filming, quote when I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film Superman Legacy. By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear. The title was Superman making our way to you, july 2025. Now, along with that post, he shared an image of the Superman logo from the film, which was previously called Superman Legacy. Right and the snowdusting on the logo suggests the scene set in the fortress of Solitude, you know, which should be in the film. I mean, that's someplace the Superman, you know, has to go. That's his headquarters. He was not just a metropolis all the time, you know, he's a worldwide phenomenon. Speaking of the new Superman movie, they found their Perry White actor. Wendell Pierce, best known for his work as a detective on the wire, has been cast as the iconic editor-in-chief of the Dale Planet. The new feature based on the DC Comics character began rolling this past Thursday in Atlanta. He joins David Cornswet as Clark Kent Superman. Rachel Brosnahan as Los Lane and Nicholas Holt as classic villain Lex Luthor. Yeah, but Lex Luthor needs a sidekick, otherwise we can't get G Mr Luthor. I volunteered to be the sidekick just to say that G Mr Luthor, and then you can kill me right off. Calgadot, best known for playing Wonder Woman in various DC films good or bad, you decide will soon be seen as the evil queen in Disney's live-action adaptation of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, announced on Instagram that she recently gave birth to her fourth daughter, her daughter named Ori. She had with her husband, geron Versano. The couple's other children are Alma, born 2011, maya, born 2017, and Daniela, born 2021. She wrote quote my sweet girl, welcome. The pregnancy was not easy and we made it through. You have brought so much light into our lives, living up to your name, ori, which means my light in Hebrew. Our hearts are full of gratitude. Welcome to the house of girls. Daddy is pretty cool too, unquote. Now let's go on to the Marvel News, and we begin Marvel News with Apocalypse. No, not the apocalypse in America, but the apocalypse in the comics. Apocalypse is looking for an heir and he has some mutants in mind. Apocalypse aka in Sabaneur. The first one the ancient evil was destined to become Apocalypse, a mutant supremacist who was instilled with the belief that the strong will survive. Now, thousands of years later, apocalypse sought to enslave or exterminate all but the strongest mutants and rule over a world where ideology, the survival of the fittest, with his forehorsemen of the apocalypse, famine, pestilence, death and war, apocalypse conquered civilizations throughout the centuries and became an arch enemy of the X-Men. But then the Cracowen Age of the X-Men ushered in a new era for mutankind and Apocalypse joined the island nation in peace and sat on the quiet council of Cracowa alongside mutant leers like Professor X and Magneto. But with the Cracowen Age at the end of Marvel's X-Men relaunch this summer, apocalypse will seek a successor in X-Men, heir of Apocalypse. In the Forer issue series from writers Steve Fox and artist Nethodeaz, apocalypse will gather 12 mutants Armageddon Girl, cable, cypher, emma Frost, exodus Forge, gorgon Mirage, mr Sinister, penance Richter and Wolverine's daughter, laura Kinney for an epic turn of trials to discover who is fit enough to take its place. You know, kind of like a mutant version of the Hunger Games or the Bachelor, I guess. Steve Fox in a press release quote the shadow of Apocalypse has loomed large over not just the Cracowen era, but a substantial percentage of mutant-focused storytelling since its debut in 1986. These past few years have shown so much new facets of En Sabanur, and my Cracowen peers aren't done with him quite yet. So it's both an immense honor and a ton of pressure to step up to the slab for the air of Apocalypse, which charts a new path for its legacy in the years to come. I've been lucky to bend the ear of past and future stewards of this character to make sure these four issues are a meaningful entry into the Apocalypse canon, and I had every ex-fans dream task of selecting 12 mutants from across the history of the franchise who might be up for the titular role. Some are characters I've already had the privilege to write, some are characters I've enviously and some won't survive the series. But one will become the air of Apocalypse X-Men. Air of Apocalypse number one will be on sale June 5th from Marvel Comics and will relaunch the X-Men with new ongoing X titles in July 2024. On the more news, several Disney Plus shows are making their way to physical media steelbooks soon the Falcon and the Winner's Soldier Blu-ray. The first season of the Falcon and the Winner's Soldier will be available on 4K Ultra HD steelbook and Blu-ray steelbook pre-orders are expected to launch on March 12th, but with bonus features like Cap's shield talking about, of course, the iconic shield of Captain America a gag reel with Lair's outtakes from the casting crew and delayed scenes called Flight Lesson, and Still Not Funny and a documentary Called assembled, the making of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which will, of course, show off the making of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier Not rocket science, folks also coming to a steel book and on For 4k ultra HD and blu-ray is marvel nut is moon night on the 12. Now there's Egypt olgy, in which you will join an Egyptologist, rami Ramani, and Oscar Isaac as they explore the ancient Egyptian mythology that inspired the series a gag reel, of course, and the assemble making of moon night documentary, as well as deleted scenes Called don't go there and breaking the cycle. There will also be some Star Wars blu-rays coming out Obi-Wan Kenobi the first and Definitely probably only season of Obi-Wan Kenobi will be available on the 12th. There you'll get the series plus duel of the fates, obi-wan versus Vader, break explanatory, the Dark Times villains, which covers the lore of the inquisitors and Darth Vader's look and and designing the galaxy. Of course you know, say hello to Lola and the planets and everything also be a director's commentary and also coming to blu-ray is and or the Very good. You know I look forward to the second, second Reinteration of that. You know that's a very good series. We'll get the pharx part one, imperial occupation, which discusses the series origins, aldani rebel heist, which joins them in spot in Scotland, training for stunts and vfx breakdown, coruscant whispers of the rebel it was spurs of rebellion which we'll get you know a little more in the stories of ISB agent Diedra, sensor Mon Motha and spy master Luthon Raul and our kind of five one way out, which of course explores the penal colony. And Pharx part two, which is called fight the Empire, which is about the season finale. So you know, if you want, you know, let's face it folks If you don't get the physical media, you know Disney can take this off, you know, anytime they want and just put the vaults forever. But if you have the physical media you can watch this whenever you want. So don't plan on on things being there forever. They won't, you know. They only have so much space on their servers for this and if it's not being watched they're a little quietly. Put it back into the you know ether, from whence it came, and wait for you know the interest to be there again. So Do us a favor Go to the store, actually buy the physical discs, take those home, put those on your shelf, trust me. Trust me, you'll thank yourself. Anyway, let's go on to the Star Trek news I'm going to have so much fun editing tonight. On Monday, modiphius Entertainment announced it will be publishing the second edition, beginning with a new core rulebook and followed by a series of new game expansions. The biggest sub-announcement from Modiphius is that Star Trek Adventure Season 2nd Edition will include content from Strange New World and Prodigy which have not been in the Star Trek Adventures books, adventures or character packs. The X-File's real series creator, chris Carter period on CBC's On the Coast radio show revealed that he'd spoken with Ryan Coogler about the plans to reboot or has, carter said, remount the X-Files with a diverse cast. Now he didn't get into any specifics, but Carter also shared that Coogler had his blessing to reboot the series. He noted in a different publication, the wrap quote they don't need my blessing. 20 Century Fox and Disney owns the show. They're free to do with it what they believe. I'm honored that they came to me and asked me for my permission but not for my permission, but my blessing. And he additionally shared. I've had a conversation with him. Coogler, yes, he likes to go with a diverse cast and he's got some good ideas. Last year, warner Bros Discovery announced a plan to reimagine Harry Potter for a whole new generation, with a live-action reboot, tell-tale series in the works with a 2026 premiere date. Now we've gotten some updates around the Harry Potter TV reboot, which happened few and far between, but it sounds like the franchise might be one step closer to finding the showrunner. According to a new report, the shortlist includes Francesca Gardner from Succession, tom Moran of the Devil's Hour and Kathleen Jordan from Teenage Ballet Hunters in contention to lead the Harry Potter reboot. The report indicates that Gardner, moran and Jordan all have the next couple of months to fine-tune their pitches, with Warner Bros planning to announce the showrunner some point in June. Martha Hiller from the Last Kingdom and Michael Leslie from the Hunger Games, balustong, birds and Snakes were reported to have pitched for the series but are no longer in contention. The cast of Ghost has added one of New Girl's main stars to its lineup for Season 3. The new CBS comedy just got rolling on the third season after the success of the first two seasons. At some point later this season the series will be bringing in sitcom veteran Lamorin Morris to join the cast. Ghost's executive producers and co-showrunners, joe Port and Joe Wiseman, revealed a TV line that Morris has been cast in the guest role for Season 3. Playing with the rules of the spirits in the series, morris' character will be able to visit the mansion where the air characters reside Quote Leron in the season were going to meet a new type of ghost that was able to visit Woodstone in a unique way. What Wiseman said about Morris' character? It was revealed that Morris is playing a character named Saul, a poltergeist that spends his afterlife tethered to a human being that brings him to the bed and breakfast where he strikes up a potential romance with Daniel Pinox. Alberta Morris is best known for his serious, regular role as Winston on New Girl. He also appeared in every episode, but the show's pilot, having been brought in after Damon Wayne's junior, left the show to return to happy endings. He most recently appeared in the latest season of FX's Fargo. The naked gun reboot is about to make 2025 a good year. Paramount Pictures announced release dates Wednesday for a number of upcoming films. Then includes director Akiva Schaefer's new untilled installment in the naked gun comedy franchise, hitting theaters July 28th 2025. Now this movie will be the first since Leslie Nielsen, since it was first announced back in 2022 that Liam Neeson and Seth MacFarlane would be on as producer. The studio also announced that PAW Patrol 3 will launch July 31, 2026, as a follow-up to PAW Patrol, the mighty movie, which topped $200 million at the box office. The new movie hails from Spin Master Entertainment in association with Nickelodeon Movies. Another animation feature, director Jeff Rose, tmnt2, is set for October 9, 2026, the follow-up to Teenage Mutant Trails Meetin' Mayhem, which made $180 million worldwide. And finally, tonight, actor Kenneth Mitchell, the actor who played four characters in Star Trek Discovery's first three seasons, passed away at the age of 49. In 2020, Mitchell publicly announced that he had been diagnosed with ALS, an entomorphic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease, having already played three Klingon characters in Star Trek Discovery's first two seasons Cole in season one, then Colesha and Tavnik and Tenevick in season two and he returned in Star Trek Discovery's third season as Aurelio, a character whose use of a hover chair was designed to incorporate Mitchell's wheelchair for his performance. Additionally, mitchell voiced three characters in the lower deck season one episode entitled Vertos, the twerk captain, a black ops operative and a rock-milling guard. Mitchell told Sci-Fi Wire in 2020, working on lower decks is the last time I remember walking before having to be in the motorized wheelchair. I remember walking up the stairs to go into the studio and recording booth and I remember having a great time with showrunner Mike McMahon and the team, and then I remember walking down the stairs by having trouble getting down. But to be honest, that's my last memory of walking on my own and for that to be the last memory, it's pretty damn special. He also said of returning to Star Trek Discovery quote for the new characters in Discovery season three. I worked a lot with Mario Morore of the props department and the special effects department, so you can interpolate what that has as much as you want. I'll just say it's pretty damn cool and very unique and something Star Trek hasn't had a lot of. I think it was special. They adapted this part just for me. I think it will be meaningful to the Trek community and beyond. Being a part of Star Trek keeps me inspired and gives me purpose. Hopefully that will keep going. Mitchell also has correct outside of the Star Trek franchise. He played Carol Danvers' father in Captain Marvel and appeared in the movie Miracle and the television show Jericho, the astronaut wives club, ghost Whisperer and Switch. Dead Birth Mitchell survived by his wife, susan Mae Pratt, and their two children, leah and Colm. He requested that any fit anything to his memory be donated to further ALS research or to support his family.
