Speaker 1:

Well, hello everyone and welcome to episode 207 of Multiverse. Tonight. I'm, of course, your host, thomas Townley. And well, it's a nice spring day today, temperatures in the low 60s. It's refreshing. It's also Kansas Day here in the state of Kansas. Kansas celebrates 163 years today. So you know, I've lived in Kansas all my life. It's a lovely state. It's not as flat as people outside the state of Kansas assume it is. It's actually got, you know, quite a number of hills, different terrain, depending on what part of the state you're in. There's forest land, there's the Flint. Hills. There's the prairie. You know it's got a nice, it's a nice state, regardless of politics. Personally, I've been enjoying my Chevy Bolt that I got a few weeks ago. I finally got to drive it to work for a week. Very nice, Very nice. I mean I'm going to enjoy this car immensely, but right now you know I'm not doing that much. We finally got the antenna up, so we finally cut the cord. And you know. So we got that going for us. You know things are going okay for the moment, but anyway, you didn't come here to hear me talk. But let's go to the DC Comics News and we start DC Comics News with DC home of the world's grand superheroes announcing plans to add two new titles to its fan favorite lineup of young adult graphic novels. First up there's Wonder Woman, the Adventures of Young Diana by Jordy Belair and Paulina Gennouchi. Eisenhower Ward winner Belair and rising star artist Gennouchi provide a refreshing look into Wonder Woman's upbringing and dangerous secrets from her past In this collection of adventures of young Diana, stories originally published in DC's Wonder Woman Peri-Ical series, that's Wonder Woman number 770-779 and 785-796, plus the Wonder Woman 80th anniversary 100 page spectacular collected for the first time. The world may know where her has, wonder Woman, but once upon a time she was just Diana, the young princess of Themyscria. Back then she struggled to find her place on an island deemed paradise by many but which was, to her, a prison, trapped in her role as a royal and shielded from the harsh reality of man's world. Diana earned yearns for adventure or at least a purpose. So an ancient text portraying her home's history go missing. She goes. She gets both. How far will her, will her, our hero, go to find the text and truce that are hiding? Find out in this exciting story that promised to be a classic for years to come. Next up, this Land Is Our Land, a blue beetle story by Julio Aneta Jacopich Scalero and Francesco Sigila Sigala, writer and hentah from DC's Legend of Legion, bloom, poison, ivy, new Talent Showcase, the Milestone Initiative reunites with his Frontera Caleris Sigala in a deeply topical coming of age story featuring Jamie Reese, aka the Blue Beetle. Jamie Reese is an ordinary high school student in El Paso, texas, with a deep love for his family, culture and home. Whether it's working with his dad at the auto shop or a multi-generational barbecue filled with music and dance, jamie loves nothing more than his neighborhood spontaneous gatherings that go late into the night. But lately he's begun to realize that he and his border community are being used as pawns in an increasingly toxic immigration debate. The last few months have seen armed troops deployed along the US-Mexico border, manufactured crackdowns at official border crossings and now at the community level, amounting resentment amongst a disaffected and reactionary group who believe they're being replaced by El Paso's growing immigrant community. And to make matters worse, one of Jamie's oldest friends, riley, has bought into the propaganda. What started off as innocent web searches have now led Riley down the path to joining an unabashed hate group with a chapter in El Paso, looking to cause some real world violence. But Jamie's problems get even more complicated when he finds an odd bug shaped like Artifact. While stargazing, he starts feeling a little different, like there's an air voice in his head pushing him towards his base's instincts. To make matters worse, he's been having surreal dreams that show him that the true threat El Paso faces isn't illegal aliens, but actual aliens known as the Reach. In fact, according to his dreams, jamie's meant to pave the way for the Reach's impending invasion. Both Wonder Woman, the Adventures of Young Diana and this Lands Is Our Land a blue beetle story will be available for pre-order at participant comic stores, booksellers and mass market retailers. Their market may vary. Now let's go on to the Marvel Comics News, and we begin Marvel Comics News with. Long before she became an iconic Avenger, natasha Romanoff debuted in Tales of Suspense no 52 as the definitive comic book femme fatale. Now, 60 years later, marvel is celebrating her incredible legacy, along with her frequent partner, hawkeye, in Black Widow and Hawkeye. Written by Stephanie Phillips and drawn by Paolo Viennelli, the four-issue limited series will offer a fresh, action-packed present-day adventure for the duo, while diving into their espionage and secretive paths. The marked occasion best-selling cover artist Stanley Art Gerumlau has depicted Natasha in her original costume and an all-new variant cover for Black Widow and Hawkeye no 1. Though Natasha is currently bonded to a symbiont of her own, fans can look forward to Natasha suiting up in this classic look within the pages of the series the eyes of a hawk and the venom of a widow. Even when Black Widow and Hawkeye had no one to trust, they still had each other, even though their paths sometimes diverged. So when Clint Barton is accused of a rogue assassination attempt that puts the US and Madropore at odds, a symbiont equipped, natasha Romanoff thinks nothing of coming to his aid. But as echoes of their past ripple into the present, it will take all of their faith in each other and the lessons learned along the way to protect their futures. Quote I love getting the chance to deep dive with Natasha Romanoff and Clint Barton to tell a fast-paced spy story that celebrates their 60th anniversary, philip shared. Nothing is as it seems, and I have having a ton of fun writing these characters. Not to mention they both look great for 60. And with that note, we go off to the Star Trek news. Unfortunately, being still being the beginning of the year, most of the news is just general geek news, so you take what you get. Anyway, in Star Trek news, zoe Saldana wants to do one last Star Trek movie. In an interview with Comicbookcom to promote special ops Linus on DVD and Blu-ray, the franchise star explained her desire to return to Star Trek with her fellow castmates. Recently, paramount announced that there was going to be a new Star Trek movie and confirmed that Star Trek IV was still in the works. Now, just like a lot of fans, she was concerned that the older cast would be replaced by younger actors. Now JJ Abrams and his cast of Star Trek veterans will likely get to finish her story as intended. Whatever happens, count Saldana in for the final mission Quote. I know I mean I heard what you heard in the trades. I just heard that they're gearing up to do a new one with a younger sort of take on it, like it's been off. So she admitted I don't know if it's from the before or the after, but that they really still hope to grab all of us veterans and bring us back for one last round. Listen, I know it's a lot to wrangle a whole bunch of people with busy schedules but working with JJ Abrams and for JJ Abrams at Bad Robot was always just a wonderful and beautiful experience for me. So if I get to do that one last time, I would be so grateful. Yeah, that's yeah, I would be happy. Either way, I think the last movie they did was perfect. You could end in the JJ Abrams movies with that and be just fine, but either way, I think we're good. Anyway, the big news for Star Trek Discovery Season 5 premiere episode will be that it will be debuting at the 31st South by Southwest Film and TV Festival in Austin, texas, this March, ahead of the Paramount Plus debut this April. Star Trek Discovery Season 5 is the final season of the Star Trek series that brought the franchise into the streaming era. The Star Trek Discovery Season 5 premiere, entitled Red Directive and written by co-shurrunner Michelle Paradise, according to the WJListing, begins a season that will feature more action adventure than previous seasons of the show, according to veteran director Jofrin Frakes, who directed Star Trek Discovery's penultimate episode. Yeah, again, good for them. I'm still not a fan of Star Trek Discovery, but if it's a show you like, more power to you, yeah, I accept it. Anyway, let's go on to some Star Wars news. Roger Roger. Star Wars news begins with 25 years after Star Wars unleashed Darth Maul in 1999's yeah, it's really been that long the Phantom Menace. Marvel Comics will reveal the Sith Lord most violent exploits in Darth Maul, black, white and Red. Following last year's T-rated anthology Dark Vader, black, white and Red, the new 4-issue-limpted series will feature 4 standalone blockbusters from different creative teams. The first issue on stands in April reunites Darth Vader, black, white and Red, writer Benjamin Percy and artist Stefano Raffaully for an untold story pitting Darth Sidious's Sith apprentice against the mysterious final occultation. And Marvel's Black and White and Red format presents comics entirely in black and white with colorful splashes of red. The adult-oriented series has spotlighted some of Marvel's more violent characters, including Wolverine, electra, moon Knight and the Marvel Zombies. Star Wars, darth Maul, black, white and Red will quote offer sagas set throughout the characters' mysterious history, diving to his never-before-seen missions and further exploring his twisted bond with his dark master Palpatine. And with that let's go on to the plethora of geek news. And we begin geek news with the estate of George Carlin suing over the release of a comedy special that used generative artificial intelligence to mimic the deceased comedian's voice and style of humor. The lawsuit filed in California Federal Court Thursday accuses the creators of the special of utilizing, without consent or compensation, george Carlin's entire body of work, consisting of five decades of comedy routines, to train an AI chatbot which wrote the episode's script. The plot also takes issue with using his voice and likeness for promotional purposes. The complaint seeks a court order for immediate removal of the special, as well as unspecified damages. It's among the first legal actions taken by the estate of the deceased celebrity for unlicensed use of their work and likeness to manufacture a new AI-generated creation and which, filed as Hollywood, is siding the alarm over utilization of AI to impersonate people without consent or compensation. You know I totally agree with George Carlin's daughter, kelly, that this was beyond the pale. You don't do this. You want to enjoy George Carlin? There's a DVD with all his works in it. Buy that. Enjoy that. He's dead. He doesn't have opinions on the world today, but you can create what you're. You can put in your mind what he would probably think of the world today by listening to what he put out before you know. So enjoy. Enjoy who he was in the past. Don't try to recreate him in the future. You know it's just. It's just not, you know, not a good idea, you know, once his works are in the public domain, in like what? 70, some years from now, sure, sure, go to town on any of his stuff. But for right now, leave it, leave it be. Anyway, to get off my soapbox, let's get back to the news. Keanu Reeves has been set to receive the inaugural Lance Riddick Legacy Award at the 51st Annual Saturn Award Ceremony, which itself has been dedicated to the memory of Riddick, a friend and former host of the show, who would be seen opposite the John Wick star in the entire franchise, passing away in March at the age of 60. Presenting the award to Reeves at the ceremony, streaming live via Electric Now on February 4th, with Joel McHale as host, is Bosch star Titus Williver. Well, congratulations, keanu, you know. Anyway, mr Tell Films, shadow Machine, jennifer Lopez's Narokian Productions and Anthony Ramos are teaming up to develop an animated feature length film based on Bob the Builder, the long-running and beloved animated children series Imagine, as an inventive international story for today's audiences. The film will star Ramos, who also produces, alongside Alex Buckley and Corey Campanino of the Academy Award-Wing Animation and Production Studio Shadow Machine. Jennifer Lopez, elaine Goldsmith, thomas and Benin Medina, for Narokian Productions, have also joined to co-produce, felipe Vargas, is attached to Wright. The film will be seen by Kevin McKeon, ivan Chances, arturo Thor-Docos for Mattel and Natalie Hack-Flores for Narokian. The film follows Roberto, aka Bob, ramos aka Bob, who travels to the enchanted island of Puerto Rico for a major construction job, takes on issues affecting the island and digs deeper into what it means to build. Bob's journey will celebrate the vibrant, colorful textures of the Caribbean Latin nations and their people. The popular Bob the Builder television series, starting on Bob the building contractor and his friends, was created with little builders in mind, through stories empowering them to work as a team with imagination, positivity and the right tools. The worldwide syndicate show ran successfully for 12 years and was known for Bob's colorful catchphrase can we fix it? Yes, we can. Bob the Builder joins other Mattel films in various states of development, including American Girl, barney, hot Wheels, magic, eightball, major Matt Mason, masters of the Universe, matchbox, poly, pocket, rock'em, Sock'em Robots, thomas and Friends, uno, vision, master and Wishbone. Mattel films also is developing Christmas Balloon, a holiday family drama based on an all new IP. That's all I have to say about that. Netflix has scrapped the release of the mothership, a sci-fi fiction film starring Halle Berry. The film, the movie finished filming in 2021, but it couldn't be completed after multiple delays in post-production. According to Verratty, the mothership is the last Hollywood movie to disappear, even though filming had wrapped. Since 2022, warner Brothers has axed three movies John Cena's Coyote vs Acme, the $90 million Batgirl and the animated Scoob Halle Haunt for the purpose of tax write-offs. Yeah it's too bad. Bridges Spies writer Matthew Charman directed the mothership which takes place one year after the husband of Berry's character but seriously vanished from the rural farm. Now single mother Sarah Morris and her children discover an extraterrestrial object underneath the house. It leads them to the discovery that the truth about the patriarch's disappearance, molly Parker and Omari Hartwick round out the cast. What if that ship didn't even exist? Huh, did you ever think about that? So questions Carter Burke, played by Paul Reiser of Ellen Ripley in 1986's Aliens was discovered that the Weyland-Yutani Corp Executive caused the deaths of 158 culnits of Hadley's Hope on LV-426. The saboteur ultimately met his end when he was attacked by Xenomorph. But what if Carter Burke had lived? That's the question in Aliens. What If a new comic inspired by the series that puts a twist on the classic Marvel Comics stories? Paul and his son Leon Reiser have teamed up with Adam F Goldberg, baron Brian Volk-Weiss and Hans Radionov to write the five-issue limited series, which features art by Guy Villanova and covers by Phil Nodo. For years people have asked me about Burke, what it was like to play such a bad guy, to which my response was always you say bad, I say misunderstood. Reiser said in a statement. Now the world will find out". Aliens what If? Is a pulse-pounding journey back to Hadley's Hope and the twisted escape of a man who should have died For years. Fans of James Cameron's Legendary Aliens questions whether Carter Burke, the company man more hable than the Xenos themselves, had actually survived the traumatic events of the terraforming colony Hadley's Hope. Thirty-five years later, burke is seeking a cursed existence on a backwater asteroid. With his once promising career in the toilet, burke's only remaining purpose in life is to care for his daughter, brie. She hates him, probably for being a horrible person, and when she finds out what he's up to now, it's not going to be a final reunion. Has Burke learned his lesson, or is he about to get all of his companions killed again? Marvel's 20th Century Fox imprint, which also published Marvel's Planet of the Apes and Alien Comics, will be released on March 6th. Universal has cast up and comers Julian Denson, gabrielle Howe, bronwyn James and Heather Travellian in the upcoming live-action adaptation of DreamWorks Animations how to Train your Dragon. The quartet joined Mason Thames and Nico Parker, who will be starring as Hiccup and Astrid, the young teens who befriended dragons. Gerard Butler, who voiced Stoic the Vast, the leader of the Viking clan and Hiccup's father, is also reprising his role in the Flesh, while Nick Frost is playing Goober the Belch, the trusted friend and advisor of Stoic. The young Thespians will play fish legs, snot-lout and sister brother duo, ruffnut and Toughnut respectively. The characters are part of Hiccup's friends group, though will eventually learn to embrace and not fear the dragon. Dean DeBoise, who co-wrote and directed the original trilogy is starring the new feature returning as writer, director and producer. Persisting alongside DeBoise and Mark Platt is his universal-based productions, as well as that company's president, adam Siegel. Universal has set the June 13, 2025 release date for the feature. Netflix has made a landmark deal for one of linear TV's staples, wwe's Monday Night Raw. Starting in January 2025, netflix will be the exclusive home to Raw in US, canada, uk and Latin America. Additional territories from Netflix's footprint of more than 190 will be added over time. Usa Network has aired the Raw franchise and launched it back in January of 1993. The deal is for 10 years and more than $5 billion. A person familiar with the terms told Deadlinecom. Along with the main Raw program, netflix will also become the home of all WWE shows and specials outside the United States, including SmackDown and NXT. It will also stream the company's roster of live events like WrestleMania, summer Slam and the Royal Rumble, and have documentaries and original series and forthcoming projects available to demand outside the United States. Peacock will continue to be the domestic distributor. Also announced, tko Holdings Group Holdings, the company that now owns WWE, has appointed Dwayne the Rock Johnson to its board of directors. Tko cited Johnson's experience in brand building has reasons for his inclusion, making note to his portfolio that includes 7 bucks productions, termania, tequila, zoa Energy, project Rock and the United Football League. In exchange for its presence within the board, johnson has been granted full ownership of the trademark the Rock, my grandfather, high Chief Peter Maivia, and my dad, rocky Soulman Johnson, who have never thought this day would come, which is why I'm very humbled to have a seat at the table that has decades of history and family legacy for me, a table that my family helped to build. Being on the TKO board of directors and taking full ownership of my name the Rock is not only unprecedented but incredibly inspiring, as my crazy life is coming full circle. At my core, I'm a builder who builds for and serves the people. I'm very moved to help continue the global expand our TKO, wwe and UFC businesses as the worldwide leaders in sports and entertainment, while proudly representing so many phenomenal athletes and partners and performers who show up every day, putting in the hard work and their own two hands to make their dreams come true and deliver for our audiences. I've been there, I'm still around and this is for them". Now, just a few days later, wwe founder Vince McMahon would be forced out due to another sex scandal. This might also end up implaking other bad actors at the WWE. I'm not happy about this. I think this will actually hurt WWE in the long run not being on regular TV and being pigeoned to put into Netflix's little cubby hole and just locked behind the paywall. I think this was a bad move personally, but so be it. Anyway, on to award news. The nominations for the 96th annual Oscars were unveiled and the while the race has been focused around Barbie, around Oppenheimer and Barbie, the competition Was fierce. Universe was Oppenheimer received 13 nominations. The Apple original film killers of the flower moon receives 10 nominations, search lights poor things, received 11 and Barbie received 8. This means an impressive 21 nominations for barb and Heimer, the one two summer punch that collectively grossed more than $2.4 billion at the global box office and did as much to restore movie going as Tom Cruise, tom Cruise and Top Gun Maverick did during the pandemic. No, oppenheimer and Barbie got to fully promote their films right before the two strikes. They hinted many of the other films that bad in the fall because guild members were forbidden from stumping for their films. However, there seems to be controversy over how Barbie director Greta Gerwig and Barbie star Marble Robbie were not nominated. But let's get into some award news that you probably haven't haven't heard. The other Nominations, best award and made feature film nominations went to the boy and the heron, elemental Nimona, robot dreams and spider-man across the spider-verse, and Best visual effects nominations went to the creator, godzilla minus one, guardians of the Galaxy, volume three, mission impossible, dead reckoning and Napoleon. So congratulations to all those nominations, and Well, I guess we'll see who wins. Now for, of course, the sad news that closes out every show. First off, gary Graham, an actor who appeared in dozens of TV roles, but bill will best be remembered for his role in the alienation and Star Trek universes, has passed away at he was 73 years old. His death was announced by his ex-wife, actress Susan Lovell. She'd not, of course, provide a cause of death. Quote it is with deep, profound sadness to say that Gary Graham, my ex-husband, amazing actor and father of our beautiful, only, chill, only child together, haley Graham, that's passed away today. She wrote. She met Graham when she was 20, when she was, when he was starring on alienation. We are completely devastated, especially our daughter Haley, his wife Becky, who was with, who was with him by his side. Born June 6th 1950 in Long Beach, california, graham began making appearances on episodic TV in the mid 1970s, including one-off roles in is enough, star skin hutch, police woman and the Incredible Hulk. His acting career continued steadily through the 80s with appearances on chips, the Dukes of hazard and in one of his more memorable roles of the period as a hit man in 19 episode, 1985 episode of Moonlighting. His feature film credits of the air include a role as the brother of Tom Cruise's character in 1983's all the right moves. Other of Graham's more many TV credits include Dragonette, moonlighting, sheena, jag and Nash bridges. Graham is survived by his wife Becky and daughter Haley. Gary Graham was 73 years old. Now. This next one is probably one of the more little-known people Composer Peter Schickel, the man whose comedic parodies of classical music overshadowed his own strength as a serious composer, died on January 16th as home in Bearsville, new York, at age 88. Zdara confirmed the death and attributed it to a series of infections that damaged his health. Schickel won the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Act Album 4 Years in a Row, from 1999 to 1994, and also won in 2000 for Best Classical Crossover Album. The composer aimed at breaking down the stuffiness of classical music in the grand tradition of Victor Borga. His compositions, including the no, no, no, no Net, the Contata Ifiginia in Brooklyn, the Unbegunned Symphony and pervert to me to me to for bagpipes, bicycle and balloons, among other titles. Schickel claimed to be the discoverer of long-lost 18th-century composer PD Kewbock, the son of Johann Sebastian Bach, the last and by far the least of his 20 children. Schickel claimed that to have made the unusual discoveries of PD Kewbock works, many of them allegedly found in taverns that the composer once haunted. He was a concert hit and he regularly toured around the country. In between, the, he wrote scores for film and Broadway. Under his real name he composed more than 100 symphonic, choral, solo, instrumental and chamber works. His work was also performed by the New York Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra and the folk singers Joan Baez and Buffy St Marie, for whom he wrote arrangements. The first PD Kewbock album, peter Schickel presents an evening with PD Kewbock 1807 to 1742,. Question mark was a live recording of his first town hall concert and was released in 1965. His other PD Kewbock recordings include the four Grammy winners for Best Comedy Album 1712, overture and other musical assaults, oedipus, tex and other choral calamities, wtwp, classically Talk, radio and music. For an awful lot of wins and percussion. He earned his fifth Grammy for Best Classical Cross-over Album for Horn Smoke, which includes his series compositions Horse, opera for Brass Conc quintet and piano concerto number two. When not in his PD Kewbock disguise, he wrote the score for the 1972 science fiction film Silent Running starring Bruce Dern, with Robert Dennis and Stanley Walden, and also contributed songs to the Broadway review O Calcata. Survivors include his wife and daughter Carla, son Matthew and his two grandsons. Peter Schickel was 88 years old and I can say, as someone who was a band Enquirer Geek, that his was always the most unique compositions.
