00:00:25.440 --> 00:00:27.519
This is Multiverse Tonight.

00:00:27.679 --> 00:00:30.399
Now here's your host, Thomas Townley.

00:00:31.199 --> 00:00:34.719
Hello and welcome to episode 253 of Multiverse Tonight.

00:00:34.799 --> 00:00:36.880
I'm of course your host, Thomas Townley.

00:00:37.439 --> 00:00:39.840
And it's the first of December.

00:00:40.799 --> 00:00:44.240
And there's really not much news to talk about.

00:00:44.640 --> 00:00:50.320
Right now, I'm a few days away from getting the hard cast off my right foot.

00:00:50.799 --> 00:00:53.840
After that, it'll be put into a walking boot.

00:00:54.079 --> 00:01:00.399
So I'll be that much closer to uh getting back on my feet.

00:01:00.640 --> 00:01:05.760
I can tell you the times that I accidentally put pressure on that foot, it hurts.

00:01:06.079 --> 00:01:13.599
So yeah, this is you know, this might be a long project to get get back to walking again, but I still have my scooter.

00:01:13.840 --> 00:01:18.000
You know, hopefully it'll let me back to work this month.

00:01:18.319 --> 00:01:22.239
If not, I I gotta wait till like next month to do it.

00:01:22.799 --> 00:01:23.760
We'll see.

00:01:24.480 --> 00:01:29.920
But anyway, since uh we have a short show, let's get into it with the Star Wars news.

00:01:30.400 --> 00:01:31.680
Roger, Roger.

00:01:32.079 --> 00:01:36.480
The score is of course a vital component of every Star Wars film.

00:01:36.640 --> 00:01:41.200
And the composer for Sean Levy's new moat movie Starfighter has just been announced.

00:01:41.439 --> 00:01:52.400
Thomas Newman, the 15-time Oscar nominee with credits ranging from Revenge of the Nerds to Skyfall, will be scoring the film, which is slayed for release on May 28th, 2027.

00:01:52.799 --> 00:02:02.239
Now, Levy shared the news of Newman's involvement during an appearance on the On Film with Kevin McCarthy podcast, calling him, quote, a maestro, unquote.

00:02:02.400 --> 00:02:14.400
He also clarified that Newman's score would not merely recycle John Williams' classic Star Wars elite motifs, although he did note that, like Williams Williams, Newman doesn't shy away from themes.

00:02:14.560 --> 00:02:26.800
Newman's extensive four-decade career includes scoring a diverse film filmography such as the Shoss Shoshink Redemption, The Green Mile, Road to Perdition, Finding Nemo, The Help, and 1917.

00:02:27.039 --> 00:02:32.879
He's also been recognized with an Emmy for his six feet under theme music and five Grammy Awards.

00:02:33.039 --> 00:02:39.840
Newman is recognized for his compositional experimentation, often incorporating unusual instruments and nature sounds.

00:02:40.080 --> 00:02:44.960
His most recent work is featured in the Netflix movie The Thursday Murder Club.

00:02:45.120 --> 00:02:59.840
Star Wars composers be now uh the most celebrated Star Wars composer will remain, of course, John Williams, who scored the original trilogy, returned for the prequels, and then composed the sequels after that.

00:03:00.319 --> 00:03:04.319
Now, Starfight Star Wars Starfighter is still not a lot known.

00:03:04.400 --> 00:03:11.759
It's been kept under wraps, but as confirmed, the film will not feature any recurring characters or plot lines from previous Star Wars installments.

00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:15.439
The story will be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker.

00:03:15.599 --> 00:03:24.479
The film is being written by John Trapper and is set to star Ryan Gosling, Amy Adams, Matt Smith, Magoth, Aaron Pierre, and Flynn Gray.

00:03:24.639 --> 00:03:31.039
Again, Star Wars Starfighter scheduled for release in theaters on May 28th, 2027.

00:03:31.919 --> 00:03:34.400
Let's go to the DC News.

00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:20.240
That would be the first the issue that first introduced Superman.

00:04:20.399 --> 00:04:24.240
Now, before that, the record had been held by another copy of Superman No.

00:04:24.399 --> 00:04:27.920
1, which sold for$5.3 million back in 2022.

00:04:28.399 --> 00:04:31.519
In 2021, a copy of Amazing Fantasy No.

00:04:31.680 --> 00:04:37.120
15, the debut of Spider-Man from 1962, sold for 3.6 million.

00:04:37.360 --> 00:04:50.399
Now, experts in the rare comic book world attribute the high price to the comic's exceptional quality and unique history, despite a general cooling of the comic book market that has been seen, and some of the prices falling by a third or more.

00:04:51.040 --> 00:05:02.240
The 86-year-old comic received a remarkable grade of 9.0 out of 10 from the Certified Guarantee Company, the leading third-party grading service.

00:05:02.399 --> 00:05:07.920
Now, the comic's compelling backstory, often referred to as its attic pedigree, further enhanced its value.

00:05:08.079 --> 00:05:13.759
It was found by three brothers in a box of old newspaper clippings in the attic of their late mother's house.

00:05:14.000 --> 00:05:19.920
The mother had purchased the comic along with several others as a nine-year-old growing up in depression era San Francisco.

00:05:20.079 --> 00:05:31.600
Although she occasionally insisted to her c her sons that she had rare comics somewhere, she could never recall where, which led the boys to dismiss it as, you know, maybe fanciful thinking.

00:05:31.839 --> 00:05:41.279
The discovery was made earlier this year after the mother passed away just before the pandemic, and the house remained untouched until the brothers were ready to go through its contents.

00:05:41.759 --> 00:05:50.959
You know, I would love to find a rare comic like that, but those are pretty much few and far between.

00:05:51.199 --> 00:05:54.800
So I guess we'll just have to go on to the geek news.

00:06:16.720 --> 00:06:20.000
And has entered into negotiations with veteran producer Neil H.

00:06:20.160 --> 00:06:25.199
Moritz, known for the Fast and Furious and Sonic the Hedgehog franchises, to lead the effort.

00:06:25.360 --> 00:06:30.560
Now, uh Toby Asher from Moritz's original films banner will also produce.

00:06:30.879 --> 00:06:36.879
This move comes as a Skydance-owned studio who is revaluing its content and existing intellectual property.

00:06:37.040 --> 00:06:48.160
Unlike some other properties, Paramount fully owns the TMNT brand, having acquired it from co-creator Peter Laird back in 2009, and aims to fully exploit its potential.

00:06:48.480 --> 00:07:06.399
Paramount is reportedly seeking to Sonicy the TMNT franchise, drawing inspiration from the successful billion-dollar Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise, which was produced by Maritz, and which appeals to a broad all-ages audience with its live-action CG hybrid format.

00:07:06.639 --> 00:07:12.560
As one insider noted, quote, if you want Sonic, you go to the guy who did Sonic, unquote.

00:07:12.800 --> 00:07:23.360
Now, the last action film, Teenage Major Turtles Out of the Shadows, back in mid-2010s, underperformed, leading the studio to shift focus to animation.

00:07:23.600 --> 00:07:38.560
The animated film, Teenage Major Turtles Meeting Mayhem, in 2023, was a commercial success, and its sequel produced by Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg and directed by Jeff Rowe, is still scheduled for release on September 17th, 2027.

00:07:39.199 --> 00:07:44.240
However, the new studio direction has led to changes in other TMNT projects.

00:07:44.399 --> 00:07:58.000
Teenage Major Tur Teen Tales of the Teenage Meteor Turtles, anime's spin-off of Meet and Mayhem, was canceled midway through production this fall, with the reason given to the staff being, quote, this is not the vision the owners want, unquote.

00:07:58.160 --> 00:08:04.399
Now showrunner Christopher Yost confirmed the cancellation, though noted the final episodes are the best episode yet.

00:08:04.639 --> 00:08:16.319
The last Ronin, also uh in production, The Last Ronin, an R-rated live-action CG hybrid project with Illa Neisler, uh, reportedly in Talks to the Direct, has been shelled for now.

00:08:16.480 --> 00:08:29.199
The new regime, Plant prefers to launch the first non-animated TMNT movie in a decade with a bloody adult skewing story, though the door is open for a possible revisit later.

00:08:29.360 --> 00:08:39.120
In related TMNT news, the franchise is also getting a new creative team with American-born Chinese creator Jen Jean Luin King and artist Freed Freddie E.

00:08:39.279 --> 00:08:41.600
Williams II on it.

00:08:41.759 --> 00:08:45.919
So uh more new Mutant Ninja Turtles in live action.

00:08:46.799 --> 00:08:47.440
You know?

00:08:48.799 --> 00:08:50.879
Do we really need that?

00:08:51.360 --> 00:08:52.159
That's a question.

00:08:52.320 --> 00:08:53.759
Yeah, that's a good question.

00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:58.960
I know, I know they wanna uh they say it's the the the all the only franchise they own.

00:08:59.039 --> 00:09:01.279
It's like why am I you guys own Star Trek?

00:09:02.240 --> 00:09:03.919
Do more Star Trek.

00:09:04.799 --> 00:09:07.600
Good Star Trek, that is, I should say.

00:09:08.480 --> 00:09:10.480
Anyway, more news.

00:09:10.720 --> 00:09:19.919
Prize-winning military historian Rick Atkinson, a self-described comic book fan in his youth, initially doubted his own work would be adapted into an illustrated format.

00:09:20.080 --> 00:09:33.360
However, Ten Speed Graphic announced on Tuesday that a graphic edition of The British Are Coming, the first volume of Atkinson's acclaimed Revolutionary War trilogy, will be released next June, just before the country's 250th anniversary.

00:09:33.600 --> 00:09:35.919
Five additional graphic books are planned.

00:09:36.080 --> 00:09:44.080
The adaptation will be written by Nor News and illustrated by Frederico Pretrabon, with Atkinson closely involved in the process.

00:09:44.399 --> 00:09:52.960
Now Atkinson, who won a Pulser Prize for his World War II book, An Army at Dawn, has spent a decade on his Revolutionary War trilogy.

00:09:53.200 --> 00:09:58.799
The second volume, The Fate of the Day, was published this past spring, and he is currently working on the final book.

00:09:59.039 --> 00:10:09.440
Recognized as one of the best living military historians, he was also a featured commentary in Ken Byrne's The American Revolution documentary and has made numerous joint appearances with the filmmaker.

00:10:13.440 --> 00:10:25.279
A recent auction featuring iconic props and personal items from beloved Jim Hansen projects, like the Muppets and The Dark Crystal, achieved a remarkable total sale of$2.6 million.

00:10:25.919 --> 00:10:40.480
Now, this event, hosted by the Jim Hanson Company in partnership with Julian's Auctions, offered a rare four were offered over 400 rare screen-used puppets and artifacts directly from the company's archives to the public for the first time.

00:10:40.799 --> 00:10:45.759
The auction included a diverse range of items appealing to fans across Hanson's career.

00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:53.279
Notable sales include the Fraggle Rock characters Uncle Traveling Matt and Gillis Fraggle, each fetching$64,000.

00:10:53.840 --> 00:10:58.240
Miss Peggy's Lavender Heels from the Great Muppet Keeper selling for$22,400.

00:10:58.399 --> 00:11:06.399
The top item, the screen-used full-size crystal of truth from Netflix's The Dark Crystal Age of Resistance, went for a whopping$70,000.

00:11:06.559 --> 00:11:13.279
Other unique pieces include a pocket watch from Labyrinth and prints created by Jim Henson in the 1950s.

00:11:13.519 --> 00:11:23.440
While prop auctions are common, this specific sale was unique because it came directly from the Jim Henson Company's archives as part of its 70th anniversary.

00:11:24.080 --> 00:11:43.200
This unprecedented move, the first of its kind in the company's seven-decade history, sparked a debate among fans about whether these one-of-a-kind items, some handcrafted by Henson himself, like a prop map from Muppet Treasure Island or the Glig Puppets from his Saturday Night Live Work, be it belong in public hands or museums.

00:11:43.519 --> 00:11:49.039
Now, company CEO Lisa Henson, Jim Henson's daughter, addressed these concerns in an interview with the New York Times.

00:11:49.200 --> 00:12:01.360
She explained that the company maintains museum partnerships and viewed the auction, which conclude on November 25th, as a way to, quote, find touch points where fans could connect with the company, unquote, for the 70th anniversary.

00:12:01.600 --> 00:12:14.720
Now, despite the sale of several significant props, the Jim Henson's company collection and archives still hold thousands of items, ensuring that ample materials remain to preserve Henson's legacy and educate the public for years to come.

00:12:15.919 --> 00:12:26.799
And finally, tonight, Zootopia 2 reclaimed the Disney box office dominance this Thanksgiving, breaking numerous records both domestically and internationally.

00:12:26.960 --> 00:12:30.960
Here's a summary of some of the record-breaking performance.

00:12:31.120 --> 00:12:40.080
Now, it got the highest global anime opening of all time with 556 million surpassing China's Nijia 2, which had 431.22 million.

00:12:40.320 --> 00:12:49.360
The fourth highest global opening of all time, behind only the Avengers Endgame, and Avengers Infinity War and Spider-Man The Way Home.

00:12:49.679 --> 00:12:52.639
Disney now holds three of the top four spots.

00:12:53.360 --> 00:12:55.600
Highest global debut of 2025.

00:12:56.000 --> 00:13:01.360
The highest sequel record, the highest global opening for an animated sequel ever beating Moana 2.

00:13:01.600 --> 00:13:05.200
Disney holds the top five spots in that category.

00:13:05.440 --> 00:13:12.080
It's a studio record as well, highest global opening ever for Walt Disney Animation Studios, surpassing Moana 2.

00:13:12.399 --> 00:13:18.159
The biggest opening weekend increase from original to sequel for any animated franchise, 239%.

00:13:20.480 --> 00:13:24.399
The number one movie globally, domestically, internationally for the weekend.

00:13:24.879 --> 00:13:32.720
Domestically, Zootopia 2 holds the second highest spot in several key Thanksgiving box office metrics, with all records set by Moana 2.

00:13:32.879 --> 00:13:36.720
Thanksgiving Day gross after Moana 2's 225.4 million.

00:13:36.879 --> 00:13:40.879
Thanksgiving Opening Day weekend for three day and five-day.

00:13:41.360 --> 00:13:44.799
Black Friday gross 38.5 million.

00:13:45.279 --> 00:13:50.879
Wednesday before Thanksgiving gross, preview gross from a WDAS sequel.

00:13:51.120 --> 00:13:55.440
Third highest three-day domestic opening in WDAS history.

00:13:56.399 --> 00:13:58.639
The Disney Disney Domus.

00:13:58.799 --> 00:14:04.559
Disney now controls nine of the top 10 and top 8 overall Thanksgiving opening weekends of all time.

00:14:05.279 --> 00:14:09.679
Also did well in China and overseas as well.

00:14:10.879 --> 00:14:16.960
And it got in single day, it got ninth highest single-day gross for date the fourth day.

00:14:17.919 --> 00:14:21.200
And the highest MPA opening in 2025.

00:14:22.240 --> 00:14:25.919
And the list goes on and on and on and on.

00:14:27.039 --> 00:14:35.120
The highest opening for stars, Jennifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman, both besting Zootopia's$75.75 million domestic opening.

00:14:35.279 --> 00:14:40.000
The high opening for Oscar winner Ki Hu Kwan, surpassing Kung Fu Panda 4.

00:14:40.799 --> 00:14:47.200
And so, you know, basically the Zootopia 2 ran away with all the money.

00:14:58.559 --> 00:15:00.559
Well here's the question.

00:15:01.279 --> 00:15:07.840
If we had an animated series, we'd you know get backstory on the world and how things work.

00:15:08.000 --> 00:15:11.039
Like what exactly do the predators eat?

00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:16.000
I mean what is there for for them to eat?

00:15:18.000 --> 00:15:20.159
Are the fish as sentient as well?

00:15:20.960 --> 00:15:22.000
Are the bugs?

00:15:27.679 --> 00:15:37.440
It's one of those movies that if you look real close at the world, you're going, this doesn't make sense.

00:15:37.919 --> 00:15:38.720
You know, here.

00:15:38.879 --> 00:15:43.120
So you have to kind of, you know, put on some blangers and go with it.

00:15:44.000 --> 00:15:49.519
Anyway, that brings us to the end of our show for today.
