Hello and Welcome to Episode 143 of Multiverse Tonight, I’m your host Thomas Townley...

 Star Trek

A new card based Star Trek tabletop game is coming out. WizKids has announced Star Trek Missions, the game is based on combo building game Fantasy Realms created by Bruce Glasco. According to a press release, Star Trek Missions will have players uniting familiar characters, locations, and gear from the Star Trek universe in strange and thrilling new configurations. Examples include combining Commander William Riker and DaiMon Bok on a crew, Bat'leth in hand, to take on challenges ranging from a Diplomatic Conference to being trapped on the Holodeck. Quote "In Star Trek Missions, your goal is to assemble the highest-scoring combos possible by drawing cards from the Galaxy deck, the Mission deck, or the discard area. The cards are worth varying point values depending on the other cards in the player's hand. As players want to have the highest-scoring hand at the end of the game, they'll want to find the most valuable combinations of galaxy and mission cards during play. "Star Trek Missions is deceptively simple to learn, but its depth is as vast as the cosmos itself. Each turn, players will draw one card and discard one card. But even a single discard can be the difference between a prosperous victory and a failed mission." Star Trek Missions will be out in February.

Meanwhile in online gaming, Star Trek Fleet Command is coming out to PC, the game originally launched in November 2018 with only content from the Kelvin Timeline movie, but now has content from Discovery, THe next generation and the origins series. The PC version will connect with the players mobile account allowing seamless transition between devices. To celebrate the PC launch of Star Trek Fleet Command, Scopely is offering players who download and play on PC some exclusive extras. They include:

"Resistance on PC is Futile" sweepstakes: Players can win a custom Star Trek Fleet Command Borg Cube ATX PC battle station to power up their adventures in the multiverse by downloading the game on PC.

Star Trek will have a presence at New York COmicon. They will have a panel for Star Trek Discovery, highlighting season four and a special screening of the pilot for Star Trek Prodigy on October 10th. THe series launches on October 28th.

The 90 year old William Shatner is going to space. Sources tell TMZ that the former Star Trek actor will be part of the second crew on Blue Origin’s second flight of the New Shepard capsule. Like the first Blue Origin flight this will be a fifteen minute poke into the bare limit of space about 66.5 miles up before returning back on earth. If this happens Shatner would be the oldest ever to go into space. No official word from Shatner or Blue Origin has come forth. By the Way, Mr. Shatner has a new album out called Bill.

 Star Wars

Director Robert Rodgriquez is teasing that the action seen in the Mandalorians episode Chapter fourteen was nothing compared to what’s coming in the spinoff series The Book of Boba Fett. He told The Nerdy Basement quote "I've got so much to tell you about that, but I'm out of time,"  "Yeah, I can't say anything about that, sworn to silence. I can say I'm working on it and I can tell you it's gonna blow your mind. You saw him arrive in my episode of The Mandalorian, that was nothing. That was nothing. I can talk it up all I want because I know it's gonna deliver, I know it's gonna over-deliver." unquote The series will be coming out in December.

And while we’re on bounty hunters, Kate Sackoff is teasing some unfinished business for Bo-Katan Kryze. The season finale showed some big complications between Din Djarin and Bo-Katan.  Kate shared with slash film quote "The way that Lucasfilm left me in Season 2, one of the roads that could be gone down -- absolutely, you'd think -- would be the unfinished business," "But that is so far above my pay grade, and you just don't know, right? As a fan of the show, I'm just excited to see what they come up with." unquote

Ewan McGreor won his first PRimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Halston and teased with deadline.com backstage Obi-wan quote "We finished shooting our series, and it was really, really good fun. I really enjoyed working with [director-executive producer] Deborah Chow, and I think it will not disappoint,``''The new technology that we employed doing it is cool, and it was a different experience than making the original three films that I did." The series will premiere on Disney Plus in 2022.

Lawrence Kasdan will be directing a six part docu-series focusing on George Lucas and Industrial Light and Magic, this according to composer James Newton Howard who spoke to Score: The Podcast, in which he said quote "My friend Larry Kasdan is directing a 6-part documentary on George Lucas and ILM, which is amazing... I've scored it, pretty much. It's in the box," unquote. Industrial Light and Magic was started by George Lucas in May of 1975 and have had their hands in dozens of movies and shows from Paramount to Disney and beyond. No word on when or where this docu-series will be or air.

Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic will be coming out on Nintendo Switch on November eleventh. Knights of the Old Republic first came out on PC back in 2003 and featured decisions that could cause your character to go to the light or dark side. The switch version will be a port of the original PC game; a remake is currently in development for Playstation 5 and PC.

Interview goes here.

The Lost Boys is being remade. The 1987 movie and perhaps Joel Schumacher’s best work will be written by Static Shock’s Randy McKinnon and directed by I Am Not Okay With This’s Jonathan Entwistle. The movie will star Noah Jupe from A Quiet Place and Jaeden Martell from It. The original film starred Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, Jami Gertz, Corey Haim, and Corey Feldman. And had to direct to video sequels. No word on the possible release date for the movie.

Bryce Dallas Howard will be directing the reboot of Flight of the Navigator for Disney Plus. This version will have a female lead character. The original movie was about a twelve-year-old who gets abducted by a UFO and returns eight years later the same age. The government has recovered the UFO and he tries to find out what happened to him. This is the second time Disney has tried to remake the movie, back in 2009 they tried but ended up losing the right to Lionsgate. Flight of the Navigator will be Howards’ feature film directorial debut.

The Wheel of Time will have Sanaa Hamri on board for Season two as director for half the season and executive producer. The Amazon adaptation of Robert Jordan’s books is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. The trailer also gives first glimpses of Rosamund Pike’s Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, who arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity. Hamri previously served as EP and director on Fox’s Empire. Season two comes out on November 19th.

Russell T. Davies, the man who is credited with helping to revive “Doctor Who” in 2005, will be taking over the show from current showrunner Chris Chibnall.

Davies will return to the long-running series in 2023, which also happens to be the show’s 60th anniversary.

The next season will be a co-pro between BBC Studios and Welsh-based Bad Wolf. When Davies, who is Welsh, revived the show 16 years ago he moved production to Wales.

Davies worked on “Doctor Who” for five years overseeing the ninth and tenth iterations of the doctor: Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant. He was also responsible for other critically acclaimed shows including “Torchwood,” “A Very English Scandal” and, most recently, “It’s a Sin.”

Chibnall, who has been the showrunner on the series since 2016, took over from Steven Moffat. Earlier this year, Chibnall and the current doctor Jodie Whittaker announced their departures from the show. They will first be a part of a trio of specials as well as an “epic blockbuster special” which will be broadcast in fall 2022 as part of the BBC’s 100 Anniversary celebrations.

In a statement, Davies said quote “I’m beyond excited to be back on my favorite show,”  “But we’re time-traveling too fast, there’s a whole series of Jodie Whittaker’s brilliant Doctor for me to enjoy, with my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm – I’m still a viewer for now.”

Chibnall in a separate statement said “It’s monumentally exciting and fitting that ‘Doctor Who’s’ 60th anniversary will see one of Britain’s screenwriting diamonds return home,” “Russell built the baton that is about to be handed back to him — ‘Doctor Who,’ the BBC, the screen industry in Wales, and let’s be honest everyone in the whole world, have so many reasons to be Very Excited Indeed about what lies ahead.”

BBC director of drama Piers Wenger. Said quote “As the 13th Doctor prepares to embark on new and extraordinary adventures, the winds of change are blowing… bringing with them news to delight ‘Doctor Who’ fans across the globe,”  “We are thrilled that Russell is returning to Doctor Who to build on the huge achievements of Chris and Jodie. Thank you to the two of them and the team in Cardiff for all they continue to do for the show and hello Russell, it’s wonderful to have you back.”

Ruben Klamer has passed away, Ruben Klamer developed an estimated 200 toys and other things, including creating the phaser rifle  for the original Star Trek. Another of his biggest inventions was the board game The Game of Life. According to an unpublished memoir and quoted in the New York Times quote Mr. Klamer had approached the Milton Bradley Company, trying to sell a craft project. That didn’t interest the company’s president, who asked Mr. Klamer instead to develop something to celebrate the company’s 100th anniversary. As Mr. Klamer wandered through the Milton Bradley archives in Massachusetts, his eye fell on a board game that Mr. Bradley himself had invented in 1860, the Checkered Game of Life, which rewarded virtue and punished vice. Mr. Klamer was captivated by it — not by its puritanical approach, which he would do away with, but by the concept of playing at life, and by its almost infinite marketing potential.

“Something about the word ‘life’ electrified me,” he wrote in his memoir. “It is one of a very few things that every single person experiences, so the market, to put it simply, was literally everyone on earth!”

He sketched out his idea; an artist, Bill Markham, designed it in 3-D, with pop-up buildings; and his friend Art Linkletter, the television host, endorsed it. It was a hit at the 1960 Toy Fair in New York and was soon translated into other languages. At one point, Jonathan Klamer said, it ranked second only to Monopoly in worldwide popularity.

The game has sold around 70 million copies in 59 countries and is the best selling board game in Japan for more than 50 years, he was also fine with any changes made to the game seeing it as a brand more than a set game.

He also invented a hula hoop a variation of the Erector set, the gun used by Napoleon Solo on the Man From UNCLE, Moon Rocks, Fisher-Price training roller skates, and Gaylord, the walking dog

He was inducted into the Hasbro Inventors Hall of Game in 2000 and the Toy Industry Hall of Fame in 2005 and received the Toy and Game Inventor Expo’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009. Mr. Klamer was married and divorced twice and had four sons and a daughter. Ruben Klamer was a winner of his own Game of Life, he passed away at the age of 99.

Actor Norm McDonald has passed away, the actor and comic died after a nine-year battle with cancer that he kept secret.  Born in Canada in October of 1959, he started his career in the comedy clubs of Canada where he developed his trademark deadpan style, after appearing on Star Search, he got a writing gig on The Dennis Miller Show followed by a writing gig on the 1992 season of Roseanne, before hitting it big on Saturday Night Live. Norm was a cast member of Saturday Night Live from 1993 to 1998 serving as anchor of the weekend update segment for three years. He also did characters like Burt ReynoldsAndy Rooney, Clint Eastwood, David Letterman, Larry King, Quentin Tarantino, Mr. Bean and Rod Serling, among others. He was fired by the show after continuing to lambast OJ Simpson as a murderer, much to displeasure of OJ suporter Don Ohlmeyer, president of NBC’s West Coast division. After SnL, Mcdonald had a short lived tv show, Norm, another one called A Minute with Stan Hooper and another one Sports Show with Norm McDonald. He also had recurring roles on Netflix’s Girl Boss and, from 2010-18 on ABC’s The Middle, in which he played the rudderless Rusty Heck, oddball brother to Neil Flynn’s Mike Heck. His guest TV credits include My Name Is Earl, Real Rob, NewsRadio, The Drew Carey Show and The Larry Sanders Show, and he lent his voice to animated projects including Mike Tyson Mysteries,  Dr. Dolittle, FairlyOddParents, the video game Skylanders Academy and others. He voiced Yaphit, the blob-like member of The Orville crew; he finished recording the character's lines for season three of the show.

He appeared in a number of films including Dirty Work, Grown Ups, Funny People, Screwed, Deuce Bigelow: Male Gigolo, the Dr. Dolittle film trilogy, The Ridiculous Six, Jack and Jill, The Animal, The People vs. Larry Flynt and Billy Madison — several of which featured fellow SNL veterans. He was married in the late 80’s but divorced after 11 years, with one child. His longtime producing partner and friend Lori Jo Hoekstra, who was with him when he passed away said quote “He was most proud of his comedy,” . “He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him. Norm was a pure comic. He once wrote that ‘a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.’ He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly.” Norm Mcdonald was 61 years old.
