Tonight Star Trek Comics get nominated, star Wars Comics get collected, alligator, lowkey, doran Goes, dc and the Pink Shortage. Plus, we remember actor Ray Stevenson. All that and more on this edition of Multiverse tonight Comic books, sci-fi, fantasy and more. If you're looking for a roundup of geeky news, you're in the right place. This is Multiverse Tonight. Here's your host, thomas Townley. Let's give ourselves a round of applause. You know I'm humbled myself for five years without anyone of you talking back to me Really. Of course. If you would like to do that, multiverse Tonight at multiversonitecom is the email address, also on Twitter, facebook, instagram. So you know, or go over to multiversonitecom, you know, leave some feedback. See how you get that plug right there at the top of the show. That's how you do it. Anyway, you know I've been playing Zelda, of course, so let me update you on where I am in the game Right now. I'm pre-end game, if you will. I've got the main part of the quest done. I'm just running around doing side quests, collecting zonite energy so I can make more batteries. You know doing little things that just you know while away the time, because I don't want to go attack the main baddie right away. I want to be at, you know, at a level that's appreciable, if you will. So that's kind of where I am with the game And you know, of course, looking forward to Life After Zelda Pikmin 4 comes out soon. You know I have an interest in that. Anyway, let's also take a quick peek at the box office report for this past weekend. Now, coming at number 10 was Kandahar, which went from 7 to 10. You Hurt My Feelings which went from 8 to 9. It didn't hurt my feelings any. The Machine went from 5 to number 8. About My Father went from 6 to 7. The Super Mario Bros movie, which is still doing box office, went from number 4 to 7. Or to number 6, gaining another $3.35 million. That's about a 50% drop from last week And it's still total gross domestic is $566 million, $277,270, which makes its worldwide gross $1.3 billion. So you know, is it pretty safe to say they're going to make another one? Coming in at number 5 was FastX, which fell from number 2 to number 5. That's pretty steep. That's a 60% drop week over week. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 sank down from number 3 to number 4. It's total gross right now is at $322.7 million domestic. That'd be $780.1 million worldwide. So pretty, doing pretty well. The movie The Boogie Man from Walt Disney Studios came in at number 3 with $12.3 million. Walt Disney's Delo Mermaid, the live action remake, went for an additional $40.6 million, coming at number 2 from number 1. It's been doing really well. It's at $322.7 million worldwide, not doing bang up at the box office, but it's doing a respectable business. Of course, the number 1 was the new Spider-Man and Made Movies Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse, which brought in $120.5 million domestically and brought in $208.6 million worldwide. So you know, it's pretty darn good. Anyway, we have, of course, other news, so let's start with the Star Trek news, and we start Star Trek news with every Star Trek movie now streaming in the same place. As of this month, june 2023. The original 10 Star Trek movies have returned to Paramount Plus, drawing the Kelvin timeline movies. That makes Paramount Plus the exclusive home of the Star Trek film franchise, at least for the time being, as well as the exclusive streaming home for every episode of Star Trek. Now, it's unclear how long this will last, though, as Star Trek movies seems that that's one that Paramount likes to loan out, you know, given the right amount of money. So you know your mileage may vary. Star Trek Strange New World fans will be able to enjoy new adventures soon after the second season finale streams on Paramount Plus. Idw Publishing, which earned Star Trek its first-ever Eisner World nominations, or released its second Star Trek Strange New World's main series one week later. Following Star Trek Strange New World's the Ilyrian Enigma, which bridged the gap between the first two seasons of Star Trek Strange New World's, idw will continue the new voyages with Star Trek Strange New World's The Scorpius Run in August. Now the series will be written by a familiar team of Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson, with art by Angel Hernandez. Now the first issue synopsis reads as following quote Return to start, return to Strange New World with a never-before-seen venture from the hit Paramount Plus show. Set course for Captain Pike and the crew of the USS Enterprise for the Scorpius constellation. As they venture into the unknown, the Enterprise crew learn the true meaning of exploration when they lose contact with Starfleet and find themselves trapped in uncharted space. Will they get out of it? I think it's safe to say they will, but it'll be interesting to see how, and for the first time ever, star Trek comics have been nominated for Eisner awards, receiving two nods in 2023. Idw publishing. Star Trek number 400 is nominated for Best Single Issue. Slash One Shot, and That issue featured a Wesley Crusher story from Will Wheaton with contributions from Chris Aylipolos, mike Johnson, colin, kelly, jackson Lansing, the Glenn Shelby, angela Hernandez and others. And Star Trek, the recently launched online series by Kelly Lansing and Ramon Reshanas, is nominated for best news series. Congratulations, and here's to those guys winning. Now Antos, who is the group editor for and licensing IDW, said in a statement give to Star Trek dot com. Quote Words literally cannot describe how humbling it is for these two books to be recognized for the first time in franchise history by the industry at large for those two very competitive categories. Star Trek, from its very inception, has always been about pushing mediums into going boldly and exploring the depths of human potential, for the judges of the eyes are committed to recognize how dedicated and passionate Jackson, colin, ramon Lee and Clayton and all the other incredible creators involved in the line are. It's just incredible validation for what we're trying to accomplish and bring quality Star Trek stories to comics fans. Unquote. Good said, bear myself. Let's head on over to the Star Wars news. Roger, roger, and Star Wars news begins with more comics book news. A new Star Trek omnibus has been announced, collecting the remain chunk of Marvel's mainline Star Wars series not covered in the 2019 omnibus. The news comes courtesy of near mint, near mint condition. This new collection will be available in April 2024 and will contain Star Wars numbers 38 through 75, Star Wars annual number four, empire Ascendant number one. Now, from 2017 to 2019, karen Gillian wrote Star Wars number 30 through 67. Before leaving to tackle our projects, greg Pack wrote the remaining issues that led right into the upper strikes back. Star Wars annual number four is a side venture that didn't fit into continuity, but these particular shoes include are included here. So still, that wasn't in the 2019 omnibus, which focused on Jason Aaron's run on the series. The official episode count for Lucasfilm's forthcoming Disney plus series, skeleton crew, has been revealed. The news comes courtesy of the Writers Guild of America's official directory website, which has been confirmed that skeleton crew will have a total of eight episodes, most of which were written by co-creators John Watts and Christopher Ford. Now, this marks the creative duo's fourth collaboration with who with, after previously working on the 2014 horror film Clown, 2015's Road Thriller cop car and 2017's blockbuster superhero movie Spider-Man Homecoming. In addition, the shows WGA listing also revealed that Marvel Studios has a new cover Maying Hugh Weisner to write two episodes of the Jude Law led Star Wars project. And also Star Wars dot com has revealed that the D squad the all star team of droids led by R2D2, as seen in the memorable arc of Star Wars, the Clone Wars will be back in a new Marvel mini series called Star Wars Dark Droids D Squad. In Dark Droids, this summer's horror-filled comic crossover event, a mysterious threat called the Scourge begins to corrupt droids, cyborgs and mechanical beings of all kinds. The spin-off Dark Droids D Squad mini, written by Mark Guggenheim with art by Salva Espin and David Messina, finds R2 reactivating his super crew, once again with some personal changes. The new lineup consists of R2D2, ig88, forlome, wac47, bt1 and 0000. To combat this danger. In addition, issue number one features a backup story starring Alex Ajax Sigma, a new character that first appeared in last year's Star Wars Revelations number one, whose promise to play a major role in the crossover as a whole before droids kicks off in August. Now let's go on to the Marvel News, and we begin Marvel News with Alligator Loki, who is transitioning from the screen to the comics page. The first scene of Loki on Disney Plus, of course, introduced fans to the reptilian god of mischief, one of the many variants of Tom Hiddleston's titular character. Now, seeing an alligator of Loki wearing the trickster signature horned crown was definitely a limelight, and that's why Marvel decided to give him an Infinity Comics series on Marvel Unlimited Sorry, no print. That story, along with an all-new adventure, will be collected in an oversized Alligator Loki one-shot. Alligator Loki comes from writer Alyssa Wong, artist Bob Quinn, colorist Pete Pentazes and editor Caitlyn Grick-Ruskett-Kergerwitz. Its cover features Alligator Loki himself with a self-commoned grin and a look in his eyes as he faces down weapons from Spider-Man, hawkeye, thor, wolverine and more. The description for the 12-part saga reads for his entire life, thor has only known one brother, loki, known to all as Knifey, sneaky and Cunning. But a new Loki is ready to take his place. He may be smaller, he may be cuter and an alligator, but don't be deceived Alligator Loki has all the same attributes as his human counterpart and is ready to get into some trouble. Alligator Loki unquote. Now, while Wong told the press quote Alligator Loki's been living in my head rent-free for the past year. It's been a ton of fun working with Bob Quinn, pete Pentazes and Kate Gergerwitz to bring him to life in the Infinity comic. I'm thrilled that this little guy's shenanigans are coming to print unquote. Now more Marvel Studios productions are being impacted by the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike. Late Thursday night, reports indicated that Marvel Studios has pushed pause on the upcoming Thunderbolts movie, which was set to begin filming in three weeks in Atlanta. According to the report, the crew on Thunderbolts was informed of the decision, and Marvel's upcoming Wonder Man Disney Plus television show is also reportedly paused as well, a move that comes after the show's Los Angeles set was shut down for a day due to picketers. The expectation is reportedly to resume production on both Thunderbolts and Wonder Man once the strike is over, which the strike is still on Now. This comes as Marvel's upcoming Blade reboot has already been suspended amid the strike, and production of Deadpool 3, which is believed to have begun filming this week, is not publicly delayed yet A cult classic of Mark, a cult classic part of Marvel Comics lore, is about to be back in print for the first time in decades. On Thursday, marvel confirmed plans to reprint the original Micronauts comic series from Bill Mantillo and an array of artists, which began publishing in 1979 and has been largely out of print in the decades since. In April 2024, fans will have the opportunity to purchase 8 Micronauts the original Marvel Years Omnivus, which will collect the Micronauts 1 through 29 and Annual 1 and 2, as well as material from Micronauts Special Edition 1 through 5. Additionally, a facsimile of Micronauts 1 will be reprinted in September of 2023. This is the list development in a newly announced collaboration between Marvel and Hasbro, the Lair, which owns the rights to Micronauts, and ROM, the Space Knight. A similar ROM Omnivus and facsimile reprint were also announced earlier this week. Miles Morales I know some people who are really interested in ROM, space Knight and Micronauts, so I'm sure they'll pick that up. Anyway, miles Morales, spider-man and Spider-Woman are getting live action movies, according to Amy Pascal. During the premiere for Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse in LA, pascal was asked directly if a Miles Morales live action movie was in the works and according to Pascal quote, you'll see all of it. It's all happening Now on Live Tom Long time Spider-Man movie, and TV producer Avi Arid also threw the Spider-Women character in the mix, saying that a Spider-Women movie will happen quote sooner than you expect. I cannot tell you yet, but it's coming unquote. So expect to see Jessica Drew and Miles Morales coming to a theater near you in live action. A legendary writer and filmmaker, j Michael Strasinski, is making a return to Marvel Comics later this year for a new volume of Captain America. Strasinski had a long tenure on titles such as Amazing Spider-Man and Thor, and is known for Babylon 5, which is being adapted into an animated movie. As if his plate wasn't full enough, strasinski is finding time in his busy schedule to take over the writing duties on Captain America No 1, which launches in September. Joining him on the art is Jesus Zaz, and the duo are planning to plunge Steve Rogers into a shadowy plot with a sinister foe at its core, strasinski told Io9, quote overall, the goal is to do some really challenging stories, some really fun stories, and get inside Steve's head to see who he really is in ways that may not have been fully explored before. If folks like what I did was Peter in Amazing Spider-Man and Thor in Well Thor, then they should give this a shot, because I'm really swinging for the bleachers in this one unquote. The description for the issue reads decades ago, steve Rogers changed the world forever. Now, powerful in cities, forces are assembling to ensure he never does it again. Past, present, future collide as the man of time reckons with an existential crisis, determined to set the world on a darker path at any cost. Now, doesn't that pretty much sound like every time traveling comic? Anyway, let's go on to the DC news, and we begin the DC news with DC announcing that Batwoman slash Catwoman the Gotham War, a new storyline that will be impacting the Batman and Catwoman ongoing titles. Well, spaying out of the events of this summer's Night Tears, batman number two the Gotham War, will also span into a handful of special one shots and a Red Hood miniseries. Now, the plot for the Night Tears is as follows a coordinated effort in Gotham City is led to a reduction in violent crime, but at what cost? Villains scatter as their lives begin to crumble in their new regime. And as Batman recovers from his epic battle through the multiverse and the horrors of Night Tears, one name runs through his mind, one name at the heart of the new, safer Gotham Catwoman. A conflict that's been brewing for well over a year finally hits the streets and will fracture the Bat family as war erupts. From bestselling writers Chip Zardowski and Tina Howard and artists Michael Hawthorne and Adreno di Benedito comes the opening shot of the Gotham War in Batman slash Catwoman the Gotham War Battle Lines number one, available at comic book shops on August 29th. The Gotham War will go on to impact Batman number 137 and Catwoman number 57, and will also span the and will also hit the Red Hood miniseries from writer Matthew Rosenberg and will culminate in Batman, catwoman, the Gotham War, scorched Earth, number one from Zardowski, howard and artists Michael Hawthorne and Adreno di Benedito. On October 31st, star Trek's Michael Dorn voiced the first TV version of the superhero steal in two episodes of Superman, the Handmaid series. Now the show was made a quarter of a century ago and Dorn has been busy, you know, has warf. But when DC Comics reached out to the actor, dorn told Polygon he absolutely remembered the role. Quote it stands out because he is a black character, unquote. Now this June DC will publish Steelworks, a new series written by Dorn and drawn by semi-Basiri, centered on John Henry Irons, the engineer who built his own super suit to protect metropolis in the wake of Superman's death. Like Iron Man, for Dorn the series is all about John the superhero and John Henry, the American legend. Dorn told Polygon that, aside from Steel's rarity as a black superhero role in the 90s, he remembered the Superman voiceover gig because of his own vivid memories of American folklore hit figure John Henry specifically in George Powell's rather haunting 1946 stop-motion retelling, dorn said, quote John Henry was the guy who could drill road spikes faster than anyone and he goes against the machine. He beats the machine but he dies in the process As it. Unquote. As a child he remembered finding John Harry's death disappointing and upsetting and only later developed an appreciation for the legends and during theme of the necessity, in dangers of finding more metaphorical machines, quote ain't no machine man made can beat a man, john Henry declares in Pal's short John say man and God mind he can beat the machine. Unquote. Now for his John Henry Iron's. Dorn says the machine. The competitor John must both beat, must best, without losing with himself within the process, is his own super suit. Now Steelworks will open with John Henry exactly where the recent Superman comics have placed him CEO of Steelworks Technology Giant, unfilling his plan for the future of Metropolis. But John's plans might not be what readers, citizens and even the super family might expect, namely that he does. He wants to try doing it without the suit. Naturally that's exactly what vengeance mind super criminal sets their sights on iron hands. Loved one and his company are hoping John Irons lowers the gleaming steel face plate of his super suit from his from on his face on the cover of Steelworks number one. Steelworks number one will hit shells on June 6th. And with that let's go on to the Geek News. And we begin the Geek News with something interesting. In a recent Architectural Digest profile with production designer Sarah Greenwood, set director of Katie Spencer and director Greta Gerwig, the group explained that they set out to quote capture what was so ridiculously fun about Barbie's world, but especially that of Architectural Digest, the Digest subject Barbie's Dream House. Gerwig stated quote I want the pinks to be very bright and everything to be almost too much. She shared that the kidness was paramount in evoking the feeling of never forgetting what made her love Barbie as a young girl. Gerwig went on quote why would why walk downstairs when you can slide into your pool? Why trudge upstairs when you can take an elevator that matches your dress? To achieve that whimsy, barbie's world needs to become just that Barbie's world. The only way the production team could develop that task was to create a world of pink props, sets, clothes and everything that was placed within the film's frame. That's when Greenwood knew she would have to obtain the signature shade from the company Roscoe, from the company Roscoe until there was nothing left. Quote the world ran out of pink, said production designer, before running out of pink, pink. Greenwood Gerwig and the team built a set on the Wernberg's Law in London, pulled inspiration from the Palm Springs Kaufman House, san Francisco Queen and Victorian Man, mentioned weighing Thibaud's paintings, as well as the film history of Peewee's big adventure and Jean Kelly's and American in Paris. You know that is a lot of pink. Anyway, sonic the Hedgehog creator, yuji Naka, has been sentenced to prison in Japan for 18 months after pleading guilty to insider trading. Naka was arrested last year for insider trading that was usually occurred during his time at Square Enix. The creator was accused of purchasing shares in the company's aiming in Corbett and A-Team prior to public announcements about mobile games based on two of Square Enix's most popular franchises Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. In addition to prison time, naka will have to pay 2.5 million yen and 170 million yen. So the fame, although reports have said that his lawyers are looking to have those amounts decreased. Thomas Kale, the Tony Award-Wing director of Broadway's Hamilton, has been tapped to direct Disney's live-action take on the studio's 2016 and made musical Moana. Now Disney announced the remake earlier this spring and has secured Dwayne Johnson to play the role of Maui, the grandiose demigod of the Wind and Sea. Johnson is producing via his 7 bucks productions, along with Danny Garcia and Hiram Garcia. Bo Flynn is also producing via Flynn Picture Company. Jared Bush, who wrote the screenplay for the original movie, penned the remake alongside Dana Ludo Miller. The wish Dwayne the best of luck has, as late-list movies have not been doing box office. Edward James, best known for his projects like Balsar Galica, Miami Vice and Blade Runner, revealed that he has been spending his past year battling throat cancer. Last week, during an appearance on the Mando and Friends podcast, almost discussed his diagnosis publicly for the first time, confirming that he spent much of 2022 battling the disease, including spending time in chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Almost said quote this would be the first time publicly I'll be coming out and saying it, but I had throat cancer. I just finished getting through it December 20th with my last radiation, the week before I had finished my chemo, and for months and months I was on radiation chemo as it attacked my throat. Unquote Now for almost, whose look and voice have made him a recognizable character or actor for decades, one of the most frightening parts of the experience was the moment when doctors told him, due to the intensity of the treatment of his throat, he had no idea what he would sound like when those treatments were over. Almost said, quote We're shooting your vocal cords, we're shooting your throat. Where you eat, where you swallow, where you talk, breathe everything goes through there. A lot of my friends have passed because of this". As anyone who has gone through this kind of treatment can or seen loved one go through it knows very well. The physical toll of chemo and radiation reaches much further than the affected cancerous region. Almost ended up losing about 55 pounds during the course of his treatment. Keeping him fed became a top priority for doctors in an effort to keep the 76 year old strength up. He almost went on to explain, quote There were times in the months I was undergoing the treatments that the body gives up and I didn't want to take my food through my stomach. They want to put tubes in and feed me nutrients. Because I couldn't swallow, they had to get 200,000, 2500 calories into my body every day. That was ridiculous. That was so hard unquote. Thankfully, almost is on the mend now. He mentioned in the air view that he swims at least a mile a day and also rose and does some weight training. But his recovery, of course, isn't just physical, almost said. Quote. It was an experience that changed me, the understanding of how wonderful this life is. I've been through some experiences that have gotten me close to death, but that was close. Unquote. Meanwhile, the Jeff Bridges is happy to report that his stomach cancer is in remission. Bridges has declared that the tumor, which was once 9 by 12 inches in size and big enough that to make him think he had a bone in his stomach, is now the size of a marble. In the new air view with ARP about his road to recovery, bridges discussed his diagnosis, the symptoms that led up to his diagnosis and, perhaps the most strikingly, the battle with COVID. That changed everything, orifying cancer with regular chemo therapy treatments. Bridges learned in early 2021 that he had also contracted the coronavirus And since the chemo had knocked out much of his immune response, this was very bad news, bridges said quote. I got this layer from the chemo place informing me I had contracted COVID. I had no immune system to fight it. Chemo had wiped that out, which made it really really tough for me. Cancer was nothing compared to COVID unquote which was followed was weeks in a hospital bed, fighting to stay alive and able to breathe without oxygen assistance and sometimes meditating on the possible death itself. When he was finally well enough to leave, he still had a hard road to go and at time at home he was still in oxygen, trying to achieve the smallest possible milestones. He went on to explain quote A lot of getting better was a matter of setting really small goals. At first he said how long can you stand For a while? my record was 45 seconds before it collapsed. And then they were saying oh look, you're standing for a minute. That's cool. Now can you walk five feet? I'm cool. Now, though he's hesitant to call his recovery complete Bridges has made great strides and has been able to return to the first finish, the first season of The Old Man, which was put off for roughly two years while he recuperated. Now he's gearing up for a second season and while he may slow down a bit he has. He is likely to go for more as long as his health cooperates. So we wish him and Edward James almost the best of health. George RR Martin's Wild Cards universe has expanded with its first ever original graphic novel written by New York Times bestselling author Carrie Vaughn. The featuring art by Eisner nominated Renee D Liz. George RR Martin's Wild Cards now and then offers a new port of entry into the Wild Cards superhero universe, which Martin has been editing and overseeing since 1987. George RR Martin's Wild Cards now and then focuses on two heroes whose actions are explicitly called into question by government actors. Here's the synopsis quote in 1946, the alien virus that ravaged the world. Its results as random as a house of cards. Those infected by either you're drawing the black queen and die, or draw the ace of superpower, receive superheroes or draw the Joker and are bizarrely mutated. Over a year, the UN's Committee for Extraordinary Interventions sent out ace heroes Anna Cortez and Kate Brant Earth Witch and Curveball to Brazil to investigate Aurora Munchen, a charity that claimed to produce education and medical care for those affected by the wild card virus, but local ace and activist Gabriel Silva reported abuses. Anna and Kate helped him get to the truth, which turned out to be far more sinister than anyone expected. Anna and Kate thought the case was closed, but now a Brazilian official has questions. Did they do the right thing and overreach their authority? The case amply demonstrates that even in the world of suit incredible powers, there will always be victims. Written by New York Times bestselling author Kari Vaughn and art by Eisner nominated creator Renee DeLiz, this dynamic story gives readers a new look into the wild card universe and shows how even those with great powers have their limits. The comic will go on sale on July 25th, so look out in store shelves. Image Comics has announced that a Worldwide Schools Distribution deal has been struck with Lunar Distribution. The agreement will be effective as of the Image Comics title going on sale this September, which will be available for order from the Lunar Distribution website for retailers on June 14th. For direct market distribution to comic book stores. Image Comics was previously exclusive to Diamond Comic Distributors, which now becomes the largest publisher signed with Lunar Distributors, second only to DC. The press release states that Image Comics and Lunar will share further communications with the direct market, including details on next steps for a seamless transition for retail.
