Star Trek Starfleet Academy Episode One And Two Thoughts
Star Trek Starfleet Academy
Well, Starfleet Academy finally arrived and...well....not bad.
So far, it's not the one-character show Discovery was. That's good news. I loathed Discovery for being all about Michael Burnham, the savior of two centuries.
It also had good characters, paid lip service to past Star Trek shows and character,s and just looked good.
So let's go over some pros and cons:
Pros:
Looks amazing, Great effects, Interesting ship. Good concept. They need to provide an explanation of how the warp scale works now and some of the other scientific advances. Considering that, why are there still physical tricorders if that funky combadge is supposed to contain all those applications?
What the hell happened to the Doctor after Prodigy season two? It seems something was haunting him. Yes, everyone he has known since the 24th century and the following centuries has come and gone, but this seems to be something bothering him.
The Federation government is moving to Betazed. Well, I guess spying will be harder with the Betazoids being telepaths and all. This is good. Earth has done enough in Star Trek; it was the seat of the Federation, the training ground of the Federation, the home base of Starfleet, etc. Perhaps with the Federation being based on Betazed, now Earth won’t be in constant fear of attack.(see Cons)

Con: Nal Braka chewing the scenery, I know that this is how Paul Giamatti acts, but they need to tone down the menace a bit. He’s very close to being cartoonish.

Sam the hologram was a bit much in the first episode, but it looks like they're smoothing out the rough edges.
The Federation government moves to Betazed. Ummmm. Betazed gets attacked a lot, are you sure you want to put your democratic government there? They were taken over by the Dominion; they’ve been experiencing pirate troubles for the past few decades.
I think Holly Hunter is a little too soft-spoken to be not only a Captain but the Chancellor of Starfleet Academy. I think she needs to be able to project when barking orders.
The theme was okay, but not memorable. No one's gonna be humming this.
All in all, I look forward to the rest of the season, hopefully it will all even out.
